So what else is new with him?

OKLAHOMA CITY – First Tracy McGrady went down, but the damage seemed at a minimum. He was declared "fine" and likely to play again, and the Rockets soon opened a commanding lead.

Then Yao Ming went out after turning his left ankle. But Yao was soon laughing, and the Rockets pulled safely beyond the reach of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Finally in the closing seconds, Ron Artest limped off, having sprained his left ankle while falling over a cameraman. Moments later, the Rockets closed out a 100-89 win over the Thunder, and the laugher of a win inspired only gallows humor.

"People are thinking," Yao said, "’Yeah, here is another year like the last three years.’ "

The Rockets were not that pessimistic quite yet. Even more asked, Yao said he was unconcerned.

"Just so you know, my ankle is fine," he said. "My goal, is still (to play) 82 games."

Artest, though limping badly, said he did not think he would miss a game, either.

"I just came down funny," Artest said. "I doubt (it would force him to miss a game.) People sprain their ankle all the time. It’s not broken."

McGrady, however, was openly frustrated by bouncing back so slowly from his knee surgery six months ago. He had been playing well on Monday, making 4 of 6 shots to score eight points in 18 minutes. But on the second possession of the second half, he grimaced in pain after sending a pass to Luis Scola.

Though he told coaches he could return to the game, Rockets coach Rick Adelman said he chose not play McGrady while McGrady was limping and McGrady said he is now considering sitting out.

"My knee gave out on me," McGrady said. "They told me if I was to go back in, and they saw me limping they were going to take me back out. I was like, "Well, that’s what you’re pretty much going to see.’ My knee is feeling right. I hate to do this, but I’m going to get an MRI tomorrow and until, further notice, I’m going to have to shut it down.

"Tonight, I went back to square one, like before even surgery. I’ve always been feeling it, but tonight, before that particular play, I came up and it just gave out on me. I’ve been trying to work my way into playing shape and strengthen my leg. I’ve never been 100 percent. I’ve just been hoping playing on it would put me over the edge and I won’t have any more pain, but it hasn’t worked."

When McGrady went off, the Rockets led by eight and were starting to play the sort of defense they had not in the first half. The Thunder, 29th in the NBA in shooting before the game, made 50 percent of their shots in the first half, often by getting into the open court and launching shots before the Rockets set their defense.

The Rockets took seeming control of the game by shutting that off to start the second half with Oklahoma City making just 1 of its first 12 shots, as the Rockets opened the second half with a 16-4 run.

"They were running it and they were shooting it well, and we made mistakes," Rockets coach Rick Adelman said. "They ran right down our throat. We wanted to make them a halfcourt shooting team. We did not do that, especially the first quarter. We started to cut that down and that made the whole difference."

The Thunder put together a 14-3 run in the 4 ½ minutes to end the third quarter and start the fourth, cutting a lead that reached 19 to just eight.

The Rockets had turned the ball over in three of their six possessions in the trips in that stretch, so with the Thunder within eight, they made sure. They set up Yao for a jump hook inside. Aaron Brooks took off on a drive. Chuck Hayes put in a tip. The lead was at 14, and the Rockets were never threatened again.

The Rockets moved the ball well, often finding Scola open, with Scola making 10 of 20 shots for a season-high 23 points. Yao made 7 of 8 attempts, scoring 19 points and adding 12 rebounds. Artest had 17 points with a season-high 11 rebounds. But on a night the outcome never seemed in doubt, the Rockets headed home loaded with uncertainty.

"We just hope it’s nothing severe," Rafer Alston said. "To see Tracy come up gimpy like that was frustrating. To see Yao get hurt again was bad. And Ron, that was just a free accident.

"We don’t need all of them hurt. Sometimes with three players like that, you can deal with one of them hurt, maybe, but to have three down like that, we need those guys to be healthy."

By the way, both Yao and Artest are stating they want to continue playing...

dude, they rolled their ankles. tmac is still having problems with his surgically repaired knee.

he's a slower healer it appears. if he needs rest to play better let him. why see him out there being vastly inconsistent and limping all the time.

I hope both of them also get MRI tomorrow; especially for Yao.

He's one of the most valuable players in the league. We definantly suffer when he can't go. If he is physicaly able to get on the court he should, but I definantly dont want him to push if he feels his risking further injury. I say he should sit out about a week. Then test it out again.

All I have to say is thank god for our depth. Remember when Mcgrady missed games and we'd lose every single one of them. This is a far different team thankfully.

Your title is wrong. He tweaked his knee.

Just be careful T-Mac. Don't risk seriously damaging it. If you feel it might give on you just sit out till' it's more comfortable.

So does Tmac. Unfortunately, Tmac's injury is more worrisome than Yao or Artest's. You'll have to find a better excuse to hate the best player on the team.

The problem could be bigger than the injury itself. If it shuts him down for a month or more, conditioning becomes an issue as does chemistry if and when he returns.

Yup and the big reason that our offense doesn't run smoothy is because T-mac hasn't practiced much, well if he misses a lot of games this is just going to make the chemistry on offense worse when he comes back.

A very tough situation. T-mac has to be very frustrated, even though he doesn't show his emotion, deep down inside he is hurting.

look tracy has rushed back from every injury since he's been a rocket (the back in 05-06, the knee last yr). he has never let his injuries heal fully and that's why it just lingers.

he should have taken the first month off to start the season to really heal his knee. but i think in his mind if he does that, he's letting the team and fans down b/c of the expectations.

well screw that. landry took his time off last yr. battier is taking his time off now to really rest an ankle. tracy should just follow their foot steps and rest himself until he can play without limping and fully regain confidence in that knee.

you don't helpt the team if you'll let the injury linger and might re-injure it.

Must be frustrating but he needs to stay patient. We just need him for the post season. The team is good enough to get win 50 plus games in the regular season.

We just need his offense for the post season.

I'm not as confident as this board is about us winning if we are missing either one of the big 3.

Bad news comes in threes. Will McGrady "shut it down?"

The word kept coming back from the bench: "He's fine. He could play."

There was a condition, however, that could be more troublesome than any the injuries that sent Tracy McGrady, Yao Ming and Ron Artest off the floor early. That's the one to watch on Tuesday.

McGrady felt a sharp and sudden pain in his troublesome left knee and fouled Earl Watson so he could find refuge on the bench. But he was seen hopping later in the quarter around and told coaches he could play. He was unusually vocal with teammates during timeouts and into the game.

Yao landed oddly on a jump hook and looked awful as he left the floor. Minutes later, however, he was laughing on the bench. Even before he could be asked he said, "Just so you know, my ankle is fine. My goal, is still (to play) 82 games."

Artest's injury looked worse. He stumbled into a photographer on the baseline, spraining an ankle and needed to be helped off the floor. But he too said he did not think he would miss a game.

There was, however, another condition that was not treated.

McGrady's disposition hurt worse than the knee, to the point, he had grown tired of struggling with his rehab and frustrated with his most ordinary level of play.

He will undergo an MRI today, seeming very ready to accept the bad news he has become conditioned to expect.

"My knee gave out on me," McGrady said. "They told me if I was to go back in, and they saw me limping they were going to take me back out. I was like, "Well, that's what you're pretty much going to see.' My knee is feeling right. I hate to do this, but I'm going to get an MRI tomorrow and until, further notice, I'm going to have to shut it down.

"Tonight, I went back to square one, like before even surgery. I've always been feeling it, but tonight, before that particular play, I came up and it just gave out on me. I've been trying to work my way into playing shape and strengthen my leg. I've never been 100 percent. I've just been hoping playing on it would put me over the edge and I won't have any more pain, but it hasn't worked."

It was barely a week ago that he went to a doctor in Phoenix and after a brief examination and visit, was told that his course of action - playing his way back into strength and shape - was correct. He ditched the protective wrap on his knee and burned the Suns for 27, hitting a season best 11 of 18 shots, including 4 of 5 from the 3-point arc.

There is a chance today's exam could leave him as encouraged. He understandably cannot be thrilled with his level of play this season. He has been in single digits in four of the past six games. He is making 39.9 percent of his shots this season.

No one can say how he feels. The most useful bit of information a doctor gets often comes right after the question, "How does it feel?" Last year, when McGrady was mysteriously out for inexplicably long with pain in that knee, the Rockets eventually did discover the injury. He proved to be right all along.

This time, however, he seemed to be battling his aggravation as much as the knee.

"It's very frustrating," McGrady said. "I want to play, man. I want to play. To get off to this start, for me personally, it's a bad start. To have to play your way through an injury that I never had before and surgery that was my first surgery, it's just very frustrating."

McGrady, Yao and Artest will get treatment. McGrady will get his MRI and it could provide answers, helping to define his condition.

If it offers reassurance, it could be as valuable as remedy to the pain of disappointment and frustration.

i think tracy can still play if you read the earlier part (he was seen hopping and could come back). but i think the reason he wants to shut it down is b/c he's really frustrated with how he has played (he's play very average) and so inconsistent that he just wants to shut it down and play when he feels he can contribute at a high level.
