I would've done a search on here but I couldn't figure out how to do one... I'm thinking of buying myself a guitar tomorrow... I don't know how to play at all. I'm thinking of spending up to $250 for a cheap beginner's model... Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

I would get one that is actually decent and playable otherwise you will be frustrated. Do you want electric or acoustic one?

Either way 250 should cover it. Get an electric tuner of good to high quality also.

Its gonna be more cash for a good acoustic than for electric. You want standard steel string acoustic?

Do not buy one of those packages with case, tuner etc. Get a good quality tuner and a good guitar and unless you will be taking it everywhere save cash by skipping the case.

Also note that steel string acoustic is pretty hard on your fingertips for a beginner so just realize its something everyone deals with.

I would not go ebay for a cheaper acoustic. Acoustics can be knocked around and especcially the cheaper ones are easy to develop rattles and hums from loose braces.

I would just go play as many as you can and see which ones you like the look and feel of that you can afford.

You cannot play at all so just fret some string and pluck them and compare the feel and looks.

Great source to find reviews on a plethora of guitars...you can probably find some decent beginner acoustics in the 100-200 range and then you can always upgrade at some point...especially if you haven't ever played before and don't know how much use you'd get out of it.

I wouldn't necessarily buy it online until you've had a chance to play it in person though. You got to hear how it sounds.

Both my boys wanted guitars and I have found them on musician's friend, I can recommend the site. BUT, what I have found is to buy a higher level than the entry level. It didn't take long for both of them to want a better guitar and amp. We have upgraded several times for each of them.

well certainly you can learn on anything but for 250.00 i'd rather get a cheap electric then a cheap acoustic, but that's just me.

Well Jrivas82, I see we have the same birthday. I'm a couple years older than you :D , so listen to your elders! When you talk guitar, your talking in my world. I'm very accomplished and can play anything you want. As long as you want "Where Have All The Flowers Gone". I also do "Country Roads" well until I get to that Friggin "F" chord. You'll understand that one later.

Anyway, the best part of my guitar playing is I have a "KORG" eletronic tuner. There are other good ones. You will need a good elecronic tuner if you don't have a piano to tune to. My wife got me an acoustic guitar from Walmart for Christmas one year. It is cheap, serves my purpose and came with everything I need, except the tuner. The drawback is that it isn't "set up". A music store will "set up" a guitar for you for a small fee. The strings should be 1/4" above the frets all along the neck. The closer the strings are to the frets, the less pressure needed by your fingertips to make the chord.

With all the tips we've given you, just get a guitar, strum a few chords and have fun. Good luck!

What kind of music do you want to play? That plays a big part in what guitar is right for you...

I would highly recommend a semi-hollow electric like an Epiphone Casino .

I know that's a lot more money than you'd like to spend, so for something in the $200-$300 range you go with this one.

The reason I say semi-hollow is that it's loud enough acoustically to play without an amp, but if you really want to rock out just plug it in!

Test drive numerous types and models until you find one you like.

Ovations are cool for beginners because they are slim bodied, you should also see if you can find any SeaGull's for 250$.... they sound good for the price

If I was you thought, I'd spend a few extra bucks for something a bit nicer. Martin, or Taylor, or Breedlove

I think a good point was brought up on getting an electric and learning on that. They're easier to play, but then again you want an acoustic. Acoustic is cool, but when getting strings, maybe start off with thinner ones so they're not as hard on your fingers.

I'd say go to a music store and play around with them and see which you like.

Good luck and I hope you pick it up.
