    Redding loses game, roster spot

    March 30, 2002

Don't try telling Tim Redding that it was just another spring training game.

Hit hard in Houston's final exhibition, Redding was sent down to Triple-A New Orleans after the 13-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Saturday.

Redding, who recently lost his spot as the No. 5 starter in the rotation, thought he would be in the Astros' bullpen. But that changed after he started against Boston at Astros Field and failed to get through the first inning.

Redding was tagged for five hits and six runs while getting only one out. He also had an error and threw a wild pitch.

"I think, to be honest, today had something to do with it,'' Astros manager Jimy Williams said of Redding's demotion.

"Maybe we asked too much of him after we decided to put him in the bullpen. As a starter, he pitched pretty good.''

"He just needs to go down there and learn to harness his pitches.''

The Red Sox scored nine times in the first inning, with Jose Offerman driving in four runs with a homer and a double

We'll probably call him up when Brocail goes down with another injury.

Ouch. That must really suck. Think it has anything to do with an embarasssing loss to Boston.

Along with the 13-3 loss & Redding's demotion, Ausmus may be DLed to start the season. :( Not a great day after an awesome spring!

Brocail is currently on the DL. The Astros kept Ricky Stone and Scott Linebrink instead of Redding. Regardless of Redding's potential, he was thoroughly outpitched the past couple of weeks.

    agreed, bobrek...

another thing to consider is that they want him on a starter's schedule, because he's the first guy they'd look to if a starter went down to injury. hard to come out of the bullpen into a starting role...

Exactly right. That's why this move makes so much sense, in addition to the fact that Linebrink & Stone (& Puffer too) outpitched him this spring. Redding's always been a little too emotional & immature, let's hope that he handles this the right way - we'll definitely need him to start 10 games or so this year.

Now if we can just get rid of T.J....

Nope. Chavez was sent down; Brad should be ready sometime early this week, maybe not Opening Day though.

Interesting move. Hopefully, Greg Zaunn doesn't hurt himself during a game or we're screwed.

Yeah, but wouldn't we all like to see Biggio behind the plate one more time for old times sake?

Not with his knee in the state it's in.

Merced's the emergency catcher. It would take a disaster of epic proportions to get Bidge behind the plate again.

yeah, but with tony pena on the bench, maybe we'd get to see biggio with that fresh one-leg-straight-out-to-the-side squatting position. . . that would be the dope.
