My dad once posted a job opening on monster.com and he said he got tons and tons of like 'junk applications', like of people you'd never hire because they had like 10 previous jobs or something, so I think if you send in a good resume they'd consider you for the posistion.

My friend, the Monster.com site has your resume in an ugly format and doesn't do it justice.

I use it.....but don't lend much credence to it, due to the lack of quality of the free service. If you pay for the super duper ultra resume service, it's probably a lot better.

I get a ton of hits on my resume, but the employers that contact me are never worth my time.

I have had much better luck at CareerBuilder.com.

Then again, I am not really looking. I just like to have my resume floating out there.

I've used it before, and got a total of 3 offers.

My best bet has always been using a recruiter. I've been looking lately since work has been slow and I wanted to see if there's any part-time work available.

Wow! There's no jobs out there.

Recruiters are free. They get paid from the employers who use their services.

What city are you in? What kind of work are you looking for?

Sites like monster.com, dice.com, computerjobs.com, etc. are for people with IT experience. You may find entry-level positions there now due to the tech meltdown, but in the past, it was only for companies and recruiters searching for people with experience.

I've been using job search sites for a while and I can honestly say that monster.com is among the worst. :D

I used Monster.com for my job search, but it didn't help all that much. I got 2 or 3 responses, and probably applied to 400 jobs . . .

    Personally, I liked the jobs on "hotjobs.com" better . . .

    What is your degree in?

I will be an advertising major, but to be honest, I don't think I will be headed that way.

coma, how do I get in touch with a recruiter. I'm in Austin, but I am willing to relocate.

Dod, drink your muselix, and after that, have a nice warm glass of "shut up juice." :D

    gr8-1,

The recruiters I've used specialized in IT. I've never heard of recruiters for other fields.

    Good luck.

Ditto. All the recruiters I've known were for IT. They weren't very helpful to someone who has little major experience either.

gr8-1. I hope your job search goes better than mine. Make sure you don't get too frustrated with it. I know how much the job-hunting sucks, especially when you can't find any work. Make sure you're open to moving anywhere -- look for jobs EVERYWHERE, as they are few and far between for new graduates right now. I do not envy your position.

well, they called. I'm about to call them back. I'm pretty nervous though. That was a rapid response to say the least.

Maybe I should see if they have a website.

    Wish me luck.

OK, the # I called was to an employment agency in Houston. They said they can set me up as a management trainee with a variety of retail or rental companies. What do you guys think? Is this the way to go? The enterprise car rental company works like this:

27K while training. Eventually, move up the ladder to about 80-100K. What do you guys think? I'd still be making less than my parents though. :( I'd feel like an underachiever.

I got a call from Enterprise a long time ago. I didn't take it because they required a 60 hour work week, 6 days a week. Maybe I'm just too picky, but I didn't want to kill myself with working. I have nothing against working hard, but those hours would have to be something I was VERY passionate about doing; a dream job, in other words. I want to enjoy the rest of my twenties, thank you very much.

Personally, I say "no". There's a reason they called you so quickly. Bad job, bad hours, bad pay. The 80-100K thing is really a pipe dream. It's there to get you into that job and keep you for as long as possible. The longer you think you might make more money, the more hope you have, and the more likely you are to stay at a crappy job making nothing.

I dunno, it may be okay, but I highly doubt it. I had the same interview/offer that Lynus got at Enterprise -- Enterprise recruits heavily at St. Mary's University, and they offered about the same package. After 5 to 7 years, I'd be a "manager" and I could make 60 to 100K based on how my service did. I actually like doing the whole retail thing. But part of the reason I like it is because I haven't done it in that kindof intense, day-in, day-out environment. I also looked at the future of the job. I don't know about you, but I really didn't want to be managing an Enterprise Rent-A-Car location in 5 years. I mean, it may be better in name (and maybe pay) than what i'd be doing on my current course (same thing I'm doing now), but I know that I wouldn't enjoy it at all.

Furthermore, do some hardcore research into the company beforehand. In August, about 2 weeks before I got my real job, I responded to an ad in the paper that was looking for young possible managerial candidates who would train for 6 months, then own their own center. I didn't know much about it, but I figured I'd go to interview, so I did. In the interview, they talked about being a big fundraising firm -- they did fundraising for all kinds of charities, made lots of money for them, and got paid well for it. I'd never heard of the company beforehand, but they talked a good game. 6th largest in the world they said. The guy who interviewed us was about 24, and was one of the head managers of the North America operations. He drove a NICE mercedes. Sounds fishy, but I'm figuring that maybe there's some truth to it . . . doesn't hurt to at least follow through, right?

So I get invited on the next interview. He told us that it was HIGHLY selective, and only 10% would even get on the second interview (yeah right!). It will be an all-day affair where we do some of the training, and we kindof see if we like the company and they see how they like us. They talked a good game, so I was all for it. I came back the next day at 1:00. It was gonna be from 1:00 to 8:00 and later if I was a potential candidate. So I'm all in my suit, excited about the day. I go down to the building for the interview. BTW, this is in a building at 610 and 290. It's a weird triangle building. You'd know it if you saw it. Anyways, I drive down there, and they pair me up with two people. This b*tch chick, and a new recruit. They are going out on training, and I am tagging along for my interview. She keeps calling me *bud*. That right there made me want to smack her up, because it was so condescending. But I'm digressing.

Anyhow, we leave my car out at the building (610 and 290), and she drives us out to Highway 6 and 290 area. So I'm kindof like "Okay?" but still kindof into it. I mean, she seemed very knowledgable. Very enthusiastic about the job. The new trainee was quiet, but she seemed to be excited about the whole thing. She'd been hired the day before. She used to be a teacher.

So we drive out to this random neighborhood in the middle of nowhere (seemingly) and I'm kindof nervous. I mean, who the hell drives to the middle of a random neighborhood for an interview? I honestly had no idea where we were. I didn't pay attention on the way up there. I was trying to make a good impression. She didn't tell me anything about what we'd be doing and wouldn't tell me ("the preliminary training"). We get out there, and I'm trying to maintain total professionalism, be sharp, be into the game, focused. We go to an apt. complex and knock on a door. She asks if the guy wants to donate to Save the Children. He says "no" and she records it in the book. The b*tch lady is teaching the other lady how to do this. And I'm kindof thinking "Um . . . alright". So we start going DOOR TO DOOR, from apartment to apartment asking for Save the Children money. But it was day time, and most people weren't home . . . apparently we were going to come back to those places that evening. We marked it all down on this sheet. After an hour or so, the landlord lady kicks us out of the apartment complex. I'm thinking "Damn . . . what the hell am I doing!!!?!" and so we walk into the neighborhood, going door to door asking for donations. This time they are houses. I still think "well, maybe I should still make a good impression", and so I carried people's newspapers to their doors as we solicited. Besides, I had NOTHING to talk about with the interviewer, b*tch lady. She's focusing on training the other lady, so I really don't have anything to talk about with her, 'cause she's busy, and frankly, I don't like her anyways so I have a hard time starting conversation. Anyhow, we do like 6 blocks of this crap. It's 110 degrees outside. I'm wearing a suit and I feel like I'm going to die from heat exhaustion. I mean come on now, who's bright idea was this crap! And have absolutely nothing to say to the b*tch lady, and she keeps calling me *bud* like she's somehow above me. DAMN I WAS SO FRUSTRATED WITH THE WHOLE SITUATION!!!

At about 4:00, we go to eat lunch at Souper Salad. The b*tch lady goes to the bathroom, and I instantly make the decision that I don't want to be a part of these shenanigans any more, and the interview is f***ing over. So I converse with the other lady who tells me she was a teacher formerly, and she wanted something different, blah blah blah. I told her I thought it was a sham of an operation, and a scam rooted in shady characters masquerading as good people. The b*tch lady comes back and so I tell her that I feel this way and that I don't give a damn, but I am not going back out there to go door to door with her, and I don't even want her to drive me back to my car, I can get my own ride. She tries to convince me to stay, but then says that she knew from the beginning that I couldn't hack it (another ploy to get me to continue -- my competitive nature should kick in if someone challenges me like that) because I don't see the big picture. DAMN I was PISSED! But I was overly nice and friendly to her and just told her that I'd pay for the lunch, and that they can continue their scam without me. She told me that they were part of a larger corporation called "DS Max" when I asked her. But I could never find anything on that company.

So she left me, and I had to spend 4 hours waiting for my friend to come pick me up. But by no means was I going to even get in that b*tch's car again, I was so disgusted with the whole operation. AND THEY WERE GOING BACK OUT TO DO THIS FOR THE REST OF THE DAY -- UNTIL 10:00 THAT NIGHT!!! And the training lady (who was really nice) was going to be doing this for 6 more months!! It was training so she could train other people how to do this, and start her own little scam operation wherever she wanted.

So what was the point of that story? Sorry, I kindof got carried away and lost the point --

Some of these companies that talk like you can do some underling position and then move up to high-wage-earning positions are full of crap. They are like spammers. They invite everyone, and keep stringing them along for as long as possible. They tell you it's exclusive, but they call everyone back. And they keep calling you back until you drop out. Obviously these are NOT the places to be working. The point is to get you in, work you for as long as you'll stay, then when you finally see that there's no point where you'll move up to a good position, you leave. They recruit people who really need a job, and start to get kindof desperate. Then all of the sudden, *wow, this sounds great! i could make tons of money if I just work for cheap for a while*. It's a f***ing lie and a joke.

Damn Vengeance, you stole that story from ME!!! I did the SAME DAMN THING for that same scam of a company: DS MAX. However, I stayed for the entire day (I'm just too nice like that).

I was at a DS MAX office out on 59 and it was the same story: The "manager" drove a really nice car; they had music just blaring, which was the first thing to make me think not-so-good things about this place: that music was an intentional distraction so you wouldn't think too much. It is a brain-washing technique, to be blunt; and we were selling coupons for Domino's Pizza. At the end of the day (10pm) I mentioned that my feet hurt, and DAMN did they jump on me. They were all like, "If you're gonna complain, then we don't think you can hack it," etc, etc. I wasn't complaining, literally all I did was mention that my feet hurt.....what a f*cking joke that place was. DS MAX is one of those pyramid scams all the way.

I wanted to post virtually the exact same story here when this happened to me, but I was too embarassed to admit that I'd fallen for it. Sorry it happened to you, but I'm glad I'm not the only one!
