The Astros have signed a pitching prospect from Taiwan, righthander Chia-Jen Lo.

Lo will be introduced later today at Minute Maid Park.

The 22-year-old pitcher is the first Taiwanese athlete signed by the Astros. He is a student at the Chinese Cultural University and is expected to join the Astros at spring training in Kissimmee, Fla.

``A year ago, we talked about the importance of establishing a presence on the Pacific Rim in order to take advantage of another significant talent stream,'' general manager Ed Wade said. ``At that time, we tasked Glen Barker with overseeing our scouting in Taiwan, China, Japan, Korea and Australia.''

The pitcher appeared with Tawain at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. He allowed three hits and an earned run in two innings with a 4.50 ERA and three strikeouts.

Ha! I was I was going to post a thread today on how the Astros should sign an Asian pitcher since we weren't going to sign any big names.

Well, now that the Astros are a rainbow coalition team: Japan, Taiwan, African-Americans and some Texans mixed in, maybe we can go back to wearing the rainbow jerseys?

Is this a different Glen Barker than pinch runner dude who always managed to get thrown out stealing bases despite incredible speed?

my understanding is this guy is a potential closer/setup man. that his strength is his fastball.

i hope he has a good off-speed pitch or curve because in the majors, anyone can catch up to a fastball.

This is disgusting! Once again Hunsiker and Mclain pass over plenty of solid African prospects for another white player! I don't understand how any self respecting african-american fan could root for such a clearly racist organization! The Astros have set everyone in Houston back 40 years.

I know man!........I'm sick of all these white guys like Chia-Jen Lo.

We just need to get more players based on skin color instead of ability. That's how to build a championship.

They reportedly gave him a 250K signing bonus & outbid several other teams, including the Red Sox. Try again.

This is like a nexus of bad sarcasm. One guy makes a lame sarcastic joke that hasn't been relevant in a while and the next takes it serious and makes an equally lame sarcastic retort. I swear the BBS is about to collapse on itself right here and form a blackhole.
