Seriously, I wanted a different outcome but the upside, no sarcasm intended, is that conservatives get to sit back and let this thing unfold in to whatever the democrats want. The faults of this country will justly or probably unjustly, as seen by the last eight years, lye on someone else's shoulders. For the sake of our country i hope it works because "hope" seems to have been instilled in a lot of people this campaign, with the climax last night, but the cynicism that will follow if this change doesn't work out will be, I'm afraid, insurmountable.
Seeing that the Dow Jones dropped 400+ on the news of the victory, Obama isn't off to a great start with the economy.
The market dropped 400 points because it had risen nearly 20% in 2 weeks. It didn't drop on news of an Obama victory. Everyone knew Obama was going to win for the last two weeks and it was rising. Politics is not affecting the markets right now.
I didn't think the President has much effect over the market anyways. They get too much praise in the good times and too much blame in the bad times.
What amazes me is how much affect markets have on the President for how little affect Presidents have on the market.
you guys are all missing the point, president bush found out he is now a lame duck, so he vetoed all the buying, thus making the markets drop. duh
That's a tough call. Whatever the impact (positive or negative) of an Obama win was already priced into the market. A McCain win certainly was not. Whether it would be up (lower taxes, less regulation) or down (contentious relationship with Congress, questions about his grasp on economics), I don't think anyone knows. You'd also have to undo whatever the Obama effect was.
Thanks for the reply. I figured it would be a much more complicated question than I initially thought. Anyway, here's hope that Obama will figure out a way to pull us out of the current crisis.
I thought my last sentence was pretty clear to the opposite. I care more about this country than any one man.
Dude, I posted this thought right after the markets closed and could have bet you money last night that the markets were going to be down today. I understand that presidents don't contol the markets, but just wanted to make the observation. Lets not kid ourselves, the markets are keeping an close eye on who Obama chooses for his cabinet, with the threats of raising capital gains taxes and oil companies losing some tax breaks, the markets will take notice.
Your an ignorant fool and it shows. Don't come in here calling me an ******* when it's obvious who's partisan. Think I care about republicans or democrats, each of them can go screw themselves for all I care. I am a conservative and I don't associate myself with the mockery of the last eight years. What I do associate myself with is principled values and given the choice, they line up a lot closer with Republicans than Democrats. All I want is for people like you to stop b*tching and do what you can to strengthen our country, if you even know where to start. My original post must have gone over your head. Let me clarify it for your simpleton mind. Someone else gets the duty of righting this ship. I am tired of the blame game. The blame is unjustly put on one party or the other when it clearly lies on everyone. I don't wish for failure, I care more for the country than I do some flawed party system that has no middle ground. The danger I see is that America's "Hope" is so dependent on this one man, that if he fails, this country will likely not recover. Democracy might go on but the cynicism will be unbearable. Clear enough.
I like a lot of what you say here but the country will survive either way. Democracy is the part that may be hurt the most but honestly we don't really have democracy anyway. We vote for people that can't do what they say and will say whatever to get our vote. I think that the man ingredient in what you are saying is that Obama is the first president in some time that many people actually believe in and if he fails it will be a lot more painful for those people. I think that Obama has an incredible opportunity to do great things, good or bad.
