The stereotypical american is insulting, you don't see that because you fit the stereotype.

Sounds like a practical comment actually -- I was thinking the same damn thing (but of course not posting it).

I'm somewhat baffled by the stupidity of the above statements.

First, because you are happy, doesn't mean other people are happy about this election.

Why is electing an underexperienced politician such a great way to show our leadership or an example of what is possible? Because he is black? That's the only reason I can think of.

I don't like being condescended to. I don't care that some maple-syrup drinking canuk is "proud" of us because we elected the right leader. It wasn't his decision. He gets no vote. The popular vote was almost 50/50, so about half of America is pissed off right now that we have some socialist in control. It is scary.

So sorry if you feel like your parade is being dumped on, because frankly I couldn't give two ****s about what you think about how we react to some damn Canadian talking down to us like a first grade teacher to a student.

    **** off.

America light?? Hmm… 20% of the population of Canada speaks French as its mother tongue. 20% of the country votes for a social democratic party, the NDP, which many Americans would consider socialist. We’ve been electing NDP governments provincially and civically for 60 years. We’ve had universal health care for 50 years. We haven’t had the death penalty in about 50 years. We don't have the same history of slavery … Perhaps it's your knowledge of Canada that's a little on the light side? ;)

I would like to say that in stating that I wasn't comfortable with the paternalistic tone I apparently erroneously read into the OP's comment, I in no way was telling anyone to F*** Off. Ido not agree with a lot of what has been said since by posters who shared my original sentiment.

I also was in no way attempting to diminish the historic nature of the win of the candidate I voted for.

We can agree on the Rockets and disagree on politics. I have no problem having a beer with you and being cool.

That being said, I take GREAT offense when American's are not respectful of our global neighbors. My wife is a Swedish citizen and a permanent resident of the US. All of her family lives in Sweden. I see first hand our impact on the rest of the world. I see how the rest of the world has not only lost respect for our country and our government but have come loath our way of life, our wastefulness, and our complete disregard for others. I also see how attitudes like yours perpetuate this discourse.

It's irresponsible, arrogant, and shameful. Do you feel that this is how the US should lead by example as the world's leader?

Sorry to break it to you, but American's don't have a monopoly on Free Speech ...as evidenced by the OP.

The OP can't be arrested for what he said, therefore he does in fact HAVE THE RIGHT to say whatever he damn well pleases.

I know, but with all the excitement about Obama, I feel bad about being negative for a while. I'll get over it.

    See the thing is....

Its not that its wrong to be happy for America for the outcome of the election. The problem is when some one says they "are proud of us". To be proud of us means that you think we where wrong first, and then made the right decision. I dont think that having Bush for two terms where wrong, it was a decision that America made, just like the one we made yesterday. I dont support Obama, but its what happened and I support the fact that we do have the choice to make our own decision.

Dont be proud of us, if you like Obama then be happy for your self that you bet on the right person, because no matter who got elected it does not concern you.
