Crispee asked this question last week. Ever notice that some posters hardly ever if at all start any threads? Posters like, in crispee's example, JeffB and grummett. The funny thing is that their posts are usually good ones, but you have to wait for someone else to start a thread that they would find interesting for them to post. In other words, someone else has to "smoke" them out.:D

In the Rockets forum, I feel that tacoma park legend (tpl) should start more threads. I can honestly not remember the last time that I have seen a thread started by him. Maybe he started lots of threads before August 2001, but I get the feeling that this is probably not the case. He is the first one to immediately jump out at me in that forum.

In the Hangout, I'm going to go with a surprise in Smokey. I always enjoy reading his posts, and I think I even remember him telling me in a post that he hardly ever starts threads. I think he should because he always has good stuff to say.

It would be interesting to see what other posters people feel should start more threads.

    oily,

we meant, starting threads as a ratio to replies. LHutz has probably the highest Thread Starts to when he Replies ratio on the board. I mean, he pretty much only starts threads. Similarly, caveman and Doc Rocket pretty much only reply to threads they started.

Another example is Will and CBFC. We all want those two to post more, but their thread-to-reply ratio is probably pretty average for the bbs.

grummett and tpl probably have the lowest ratio, I'd guess. I'm sure aelliott is near the top, too. Another favorite for basketball analysis is cato13. Crisco and DoD rarely start threads over there, too.

    Good call on Cato13, crispee.

It seems like to me that NIKEstrad only starts threads after games (like a game analysis). I haven't seen a thread started by him in several months, but maybe I'm crazy for thinking that.

SamCassell, Castor27, and DVauthrin are others that should start more threads. Just in talking with them, I have discovered that they have some good analysis and points about things.

I think some people are just not comfortable with starting a thread. But that is just a theory on my part.

Please start less: Crispee, Manny ;) , DaDakota (less Francis-/Mobley-bashing, please), ZRB (post-loss-threads), boy/glynch (propaganda threads)
Please start more: LHutz, rockHEAD, Will, Oeilpere, DaDakota/ZRB (other threads than the ones mentioned above)

aren't you really just asking them to post more.

we are talking about people increasing their thread starts:total posts ratio.

I guess you lawyers are pretty bad at math, and don't understand this ratio thing, except for dollars per hour.

I wish I would start more threads. But if I don't post an idea for a thread right away I'll either forget about it or someone else will start one that's similar. Plus I've seen a lot of threads here and it'll be rare if I start a thread that I think has already been talked about ad nauseum. I have no problem putting my input into already discussed topics but I wont start them.

I wish Oilly-pear would start more threads, I like reading his stuff. CBFC. And tpl, aelliot, Nikestrad, where are the MManal posts? Will, Clutch, BK, Puede, HEB ...

that's about all I can think of. BTW, I'm only thinking of the Rockets Forum, and only of posters that I would think would do an excellent job at starting interesting new threads consistantly. Not thinking of any ratio. And I'm sure I'm leaving out some ...

No, I am also asking them to start more threads because, for example, rockHEAD usually posts funny pictures and interesting things to start threads. Thanks for explaining what you are talking about. It was too hard for me to understand without that explanation (second time you did this in this thread). Perhaps it would be a good idea if you did NOT assume that other people do not understand what is going on without an additional explanation from you. Just a friendly hint because I have seen you doing this so many times.

    True :).

    SJC:

It is my fault because I wasn't more explicit in what I meant by my thread title. crispee knew what I was talking about because we had discussed it last weekend. But I do from time to time do a poor job in making my posts clearer when I'm looking for feedback. I have a feeling that is why this thread is not doing as well as I thought it might because of the confusion of the initial post.

You look at this site and see over 3,000 members, and it seems like to me that maybe 50 or a little more than that are consistent thread starters. Why is that? There are so many good posters here that I really would like some insight on why these posters only want to contribute to a thread then start a new one. It's like some people are waiting for someone to initiate then they will contribute. I guess you can call it being reactive compared to being proactive.

Crisco - I know what you are talking about. I get so many ideas and I have a tough time in trying not to just go crazy and start hundreds of threads that have popped in my head. I always try to wait and see if someone else gets a similar idea. However, one of my worst character traits is that I have no patience. Therefore, I get tired of waiting and I just say "Screw it..I'm starting this thread." A good example is Old School's pet peeves thread. I have been thinking of something like that too, but it has been more of a back burner thing. However, I'm definitely glad that he started that thread.

I just think that the BBS, as good as it right now, would get even better if some of these really good posters that have been mentioned already would start threads.

I like the BBS as is, and if anything wish some people would start a few fewer threads. Some people are thread starters (Hutzie and tree, for example) while others are "counter-punchers" (I would include myself in this catagory, the second to last time I strated a thread, most of the responses were either "I hate it when people start threads like this" (from one of the admins no less), or of the Finn*-esque "I agree" variety.) Oh well, such is life. I do wish that whoever is impersonationg DUKE reasonably well would post more under that persona, although I can understand that it would be difficult to try to mimic another style very often. On second thought, I just wish the original Hutz would come back. Not to derail this thread, but does anyone know if fake-hutz or original Hutz posted during the poetry and ex-wife periods?

Some people are leaders, and some are followers.

Some people don't know when to shut the f* up, and some do...

    Others just can't control themselves.
