Clutchfans I need some help/advice on purchasing/buying a suit! Next Saturday (Nov. 8), I have a huge event that I will be attending and there are going to be some real big shot attorneys there. Only a handful of law students were invited so the crowd outisde of the attorneys is going to be small. Now I need a go get a suit because I forgot mine back in Los Angeles. I need some help/advice on getting a suit, but the key factor is budget because the school doesn't like us working during the first year so the only income for rent/food/etc is my loan. I don't want to spend too much on a suit because I will be getting some more in a couple of months for my summer legal job and next years job interviews. So any advice/help is greatly appreciated. My friends who are 2Ls and 3Ls told me to check out Nordstorms Rack because they have really good suits at good prices. What should I be looking for in a suit? My parents helped me pick the other suit so this is really going to be the first one I buy on my own. The other problem is I need to do this ASAP so I can get is tailored if necessary by next friday.
First, don't overspend. No lawyer is going to knock a 1L for not showing up in an expensive suit, if they'd even notice at all. Just look for something simple and conservative. If you're looking to spend the bare minimum, you can check out Suit Mart in Houston. You'll be able to find something there for 100 bucks pretty easy. If you are a slim guy, I hear good things about the suits at Target. Otherwise K&G Mens Store has practical suits for under 200, as does JC Penny or any other department store. Before this summer, be on the lookout for a sale at Jos. A. Banks. They have sales all the time (200 dollar suits, sometimes 3 suits for 500). Sounds to me that you should go shopping TONIGHT, so you can see a tailor tomorrow to get any alterations in time to get your suit to the cleaners.
Cool thanks. I will probably head out tonight or first thing tomorrow. I should have clarified that I am in San Francisco, but I know there is a couple department stores in Union Square and the mall so I will check them out.
Speaking of Jos. A. Banks, I think they are suppose to have some huge sale, 50% off the entire store except shoes I believe. I think its only tomorrow too. You should definitely check it out, but make sure they have that sale in your area too first.
Check out this thread that I started about a month ago on this same subject: link Short version: Lots of good advice, but the best I got was from Fatty: Go to Syms and get a suit. I got an awesome suit for cheap from there. They have on-site tailoring, too. Good luck
