This is good for him... good for his agent.... but most importantly great for us since the Lakers overpaid. You guys should be happy he got that much. Some of you guys seem upset he got paid and are questioning the contract. Why?
Not close. 3yrs/$42MM is no max deal. The 4th year is a team option. I think the Lakers did fine. If Bynum doesn't turn out to be a franchise center, they overpaid some.
Its high but not ridiculously high. Remember the kid is only 21 and still has a lot of time to improve before hitting his prime.
you guys who wanna say something for today the rockets' game.i just lost my mind. why rick don't let doucy to the game?
What happened to the 78 million that was on the table from the Lakers (and Bynum wanting 88 million)? That would have been really sweet if he signed for that 78 mill contract and really tying up the Lakers big time.
Goodness, it's like three days into the season and he's getting that much?! I guess that is the Lakers' way of investing in the future, because at only 20 years, he should have a bright future, and players are technically paid based on their potential for the team. Nevertheless, I'm not sure why they didn't wait at least a bit before the All-Star game to see how he pans out (which I think would be better than waiting until the end of the year where they could to have to match some absurd offers to keep him). Oh well, guess this means adios Odom!
Very simple, after October 31st, teams cannot resign any of their players until free agency opens on July 1st. And don't think this is the end of Odom as a Laker, who knows what will happen this season and how good the relationship is between the Lakers FO and Odom.
I don't believe for one minute the Lakers had a $78 million offer on the table for Bynum. I betcha the deal Bynum's agent accepted has been there for a while but the agent was reaching for the stars and asking for a near-max deal. Both he and Bynum knew it wouldn't happen but wanted to make sure they got as much as the Lakers would offer. So they waited until the last minute before accepting this deal. Bynum let it slip early it wouldn't take a max contract to get him. For a youngster who just turned 21 to get $42 million guaranteed is crazy, but oh well. I think with the progress Bynum has shown that the Lakers didn't overpay. Nene, Dalembert, K-Mart, etc are examples of stupid contracts by dumb teams.
I didn't really closely follow this but I could have sworn reading somewhere the lakers were offering that and Bynum's agent wanting more. Google came up nothing. Oh well.
You have to play the odds. And odds are he's going to put up pretty good numbers. I think he'll probably pull off in the realm of 14-10-2 this year and will only get better, making it a smart move. If he's only average, it's only a 3-year deal. Smart move for the Lakers.
Lakers would never draft a bogus like Bogut. this isn't the first time the Lakers find a gem in a 17-yr old high schooler. about 13 yr ago, they trading starting C Divac for a 17 Yr high schooler, son of Jelly Bean Bryant.
When did they start giving that kid a big contract? I think I am one of the few people on this board who actually think Bynum has the potential to become something special. So I am not dissing him. But he is also unproven. I mean, Kobe at least showed his competitiveness from the very beginning. Bynum has a reputation of not very driven. (I don't know if this reputation has any merit.) He has all the tools to be a great center. I even say that he is like a bigger Dwight Howard. But his aggressiveness is nowhere near Howard. A couple of years from now, people might say that the Lakes was smart in signing him with that contract. But it could also turn out that it was a stupid move. What I am saying is that, they don't need to gamble this early. They have a full season to watch the kid play before they have to make a decision.
Did you see that Chuck was telling Webber and Kenny that Bynum's contract is more than what Chuck made his entire NBA career.
