Yes I saw the FT numbers today and last night; insane % compared to last year. I still wanna see Chuck's FT (assuming that he practiced FT's)
FT shooting was very strong in preseason also. Hopefully this continues, because it really makes a difference.
Ya, I would say with some confidence that this yr we'll finally see some decent FT shooting. Heck, even TMAC shoots his freebies well in the four games he played.
I think it was just more that last year was an abberation. Tracy had his worst FT shooting season ever, and even guys like Rafer Battier and Scola were below their career averages. Landry and Brooks both shoot free throws very well, and are naturally going to do a lot better with the confidence that not being a rookie anymore brings. Finally, the players we added, Barry (90%+) and Artest (~75%) will add to our average as well. We should move into the top half of the league in FT percentage easily, and we didn't need any kind of superb FT shooting coach to do it. If Hayes starts making his FT's, well then...you can credit the coaching.
I noticed it as well. We are shooting lights out from the line. AND we are actually getting there. If we improve our rebounding and transition defense while continuing to hit our free throws we are nearly impossible to beat. Other teams will have to play a flawless game. And I am not even saying we need to be at max capacity (Battier, healthy McGrady, solid rotation, learn the offense, gel, etc...) I am saying right now, if we control the boards, limit TOs, hit FTs, and transition, we will easily be the deadliest team outside of maybe LA.
Chuck's new form is probably worse than his old form. Right-handed shooters shouldn't move their left foot on a shot. I can't believe the announcers said Battier helped him with that left foot thing. Maybe Rick Barry needs to teach him the ol' Granny style. Chuck is in for a long year. I'd be happy to work with him explaining the physics of why he'll miss a lot and working to correct his shot. There is a right way to maximize the possibility to hit free throws.
I missed the first half but when I saw 10-11 free throw by Tmac, I almost..well, you know... Seriously, I don't think he did that well in any of the 67ish games he played last year. I'm amazed, too.
Also, I was at the Kings pre-season game vs the Rockets in Sacramento and I still tell all of my friends that I saw Tracy Mcgrady hit five free throws in a roll -- a 3 pt foul and then another 2.
maybe since the players are consistently making their FT, they have the confidence to attack the basket more aggressively knowing there's a good chance they'll get 2 points out of it.
Basically it's just T-Mac making his FTs (2 preseason games and 2 regular season games). I don't know how he improved it. But Battier training on Hayes aint working
Alvin's nailed it. Gunning was brought in recently to help. I can't quite remember but I thought I heard Morey on the radio awhile ago talking about Gunning working specifically on folks free throw shooting.
