Do you leave your external HD on at all times you run your computer?

It has worked for me. Doesn't work for long or many times, but it has worked. (It saved my photos from my son's first year.)

I bought an extra external drive that I just use for backup. The only time it will be plugged in is when I'm copying onto it or I need it. DVD the important stuff.

    I bought 2 externals.

One for extra data. One to back that data up.

The problem with increased HDD space is that backing it up requires even more HDD space...

Actually works with the older HDs, but even then it is mostly good for a one-time transfer of everything on the drive. Haven't tried it on a newer one.

no, i dont leave it all the time... in fact i'd been turning it on and off a lot lately because it's been running back and forth between computers... probably part of the problem.

    it's a maxtor, btw.

Are you sure its the drive or the connector. If you don't hear clicking, it may be the usb to ata interface and you could take the drive out of the casing and plug put it into another case or stick it internally into your machine.
