The play by the same name was written by Herb Gardner. This movie also contains perhaps the finest performance by a child actor (Barry Stevens, I think-- he later appeared in the latter years of All in the Family). The movie is very hard to find. Once in awhile, I'll see it on AMC or some such place... but worth the finding. "Author, Author" makes you just want to get up and go adopt! Pacino has such a huge heart in that character. I love the scene near the end when Spike returns with the new baseball card collection which he starts handing out to Geraldo and Igor-- with Ivan watching in the background. Just a great scene!
Basquiat Ocean's Eleven (the original) Little Odessa Sophie's Choice The Postman (it wasn't all that bad) Thirteen Days Heavy Ishtar (again, not all that bad) Requiem For A Dream Pi Terms of Endearment (not just a chick flick) Hamlet (Branagh's..... I'd have nominated it over Jerry Maguire ) Waiting For Guffman Rocky A Clockwork Orange Just off the top of my head.....there are many more.......
I'll throw my support behind the previously mentioned Rounders, Wonder Boys and Suicide Kings. Swimming With Sharks is another I would mention. Also, I think Bowfinger is underrated. That's just off the top of my head. Oh, and anything by Stanley Kubrick is overrated.
Singles, I loved Pearl Jam in that movie. the arrival. . . I think thats what its called. It was about aliens trying to take over earth, it also had charlie sheen in it
<b>Pi</b> - Many people who've seen it love it. But too many people haven't seen it. Also, I think it's WAAAY to different for most people. <b>Rocky</b> - It's highly acclaimed, but too many people think it's merely "the movie with 'Yo Adrian'" . . . <b>Logan's Run</b> - This movie was pretty neat . . . at $7.99 for the DVD, it's a bargain. It wasn't GREAT, but it was pretty solid. <b>Planet of the Apes</b> - The original. A lot of people think it's stupid, but those same people haven't actually seen it. From beginning to end, the concept is kindof strange, but it makes for a good story. <b>El Mariachi</b> - Desperado sucked in comparison . . . <b>Strictly Ballroom</b> - Okay, I find NOTHING cool about ballroom dancing. I mean, I think if you are a good dancer, that kicks ass because chicks dig guys who can dance. But on the whole, I hate ballroom dancing, and a MOVIE about it is even worse. But that's the thing, is it's not a movie about ballroom dancing. It's a great story about love and human relationships. <b>Rushmore</b> - Very cool movie. Great characters and excellent acting. Cool storyline. <b>Batman: Mask of the Phantasm</b> - It was basically "Batman: The Animated Series . . . THE MOVIE", but it was SOOOOO much more than that. Honestly, this is not a children's movie, but more of a mature picture. It's the best of the Batman movies, UNQUESTIONABLY. The story is excellent, with GREAT characters, and a storyline that's better than 95% of the movies you'll see. Honestly, if you haven't seen it, I suggest you pick it up. It really is good. Don't let the animation fool you into thinking this is for the kids. <b>The Quiet Man</b> - I don't know how many people have seen this or how highly regarded it is, but it is an excellent movie with great acting. The story is wonderful, and you'll remember it for a long while. <b>UHF</b> - Weird Al's movie was great!! Wheel of Fish . . . "You get to drink from THE FIREHOSE" . . . hahahaha! See it if you haven't.
"Yaz! This is...it's YAZ! Spike, I love you!" My favorite quote was when his producers and director came to his house and the guy keeps saying, "Let me just bounce this off you." That just kills me everytime I see it. And, the slam of Tuesday Weld: "Don't go swimming around here, Gloria; it's shark infested waters. Don't go swimming. Give the sharks a break."
YES! I'd only seen it when I was a kid but I watched it again a few months ago and it is really an excellent movie which really surprised me. Plus the Statue of Liberty scene has to be one of the greatest scenes ever.
Half-Baked is one of the great examples of that most underrated genre, the stoner movie. Steven Wright as the dude who is asleep on the couch (for the entire movie) whom nobody knows is classic. The Man Who Fell to Earth is a great science fiction movie by Nicholas Roeg, starring David Bowie who played, gasp, an alien. The plot is about how he became corrupted by life on Earth and the film generally has an odd, but compelling tone. Incidentally, Marilyn Manson, if you are reading this BBS (as I am sure you do) you may send your royalty checks to Roeg and Bowie anytime. Thank you. Crash I lot of people hated David Croenenberg's film about a group of people who are so disconnected from life that derive sexual pleasure from auto accidents. Sex and Death fetish writ large! Yay! I thought the cold tone of the movie perfectly matched the subject matter. And, yes, the film turned me on...crash, indeed. (Now, if I could only figure out how to get the new car smell removed from my pants!) Lone Star I think this is one of the best movies of the 90's. John Sayles puts so much detail and nuance into all of his films and this is perhaps his best. I think it is criminally underlooked. Sayles touches on so many issues..gender, the generation gap, racism, national pride, life in the Southwest, social revisionism...but the movie is not about slogans, or politics, it is about people and their relationships. All of this is framed by a very compelling murder mystery and satisfying love story. Awesome, yet subtle movie.
"Let me bounce THIS off you..." (as Ivan whacks him with the hard copy....) Now, I'm going to have to go rent this... been awhile since I last saw it.... got the fever now.
Is this a joke? Joe Joe, you do know that I was involved in making that picture, right? I am in the credits. My company Fever Pitch Studios is a breakoff of Digital Anvil, and we did the movie. Chris Roberts is one of my best friends and was in my wedding, you actually liked it? Well kudos to you, let me say that if we had not run out of money and Fox made us print what we had, it would have been 50% better. The script had a traitor and the Kilrathi all needed to be reshot. Man, you liked the movie? Cool. DaDakota
Wow...cool, my roomate in college is El Moco...Peter Marquardt...also in my wedding. Robert Rodriquez is another guy that was involved in Digital Anvil, a heck of a guy and his house has an awesome playground for his boys. Wow...this thread is cheering me up. DaDakota
