Alright im sick of his play along with everyone else on this thread. i say give him one more season to get an offensive game and get serious about playing or ship his ass out. Rudy T needs to light a fire under his a$% and get him to play ball.

he should take some more shots a game though 10 will do he attempted 4 last night. he needs to call for the ball, work on moves in practice with hakeem, and hit the weight room every day until next season.

the fact is that was a silly mistake on houstons part giving him that big fat contract. he got complacent after it when we could have signed him at the END OF THE YEAR and he would have been playing his heart out.

i say give him 1 more season to get serious or ship him out of here.

the fact is an effective cato would help us out enormously. a 17 pt 9 rb 2.5 blk would be extremely effective. he is quick and athletic but needs to bulk up and show up EVERY GAME the same goes for a few other rockets.

im one of the few people who doesnt wanna see hakeem retire until next season and i hope rudy T hires him as an assistant coach or something. he needs to work with rogers, cato and whoever we draft on some footwork, moves, situations, and life in general. hakeem is a class act and should show them the way the game should be played.

or another solution is get barkley back hear and get him to start yelling at cato until he gets the message. right now i say bench him until he gets the message put up or shut up.

PS i know this has been talked about in construction through critiscism but there were alot of trade for soandso so i decided to make a new thread on it.

I agree with ya TexaSalsa. Cato is good on defense but his offense is well, bad.

If Cato is going to be our starting center for the future, and if we're going to be successful, he needs to contribute more than 12 and 8 a night. The center position is, IMHO, the most important position and your center has to be a threat. We can't rely on our guards all the time. I'm looking forward to CD hopefully working with Cato in the offseason and us seeing a different player on the court, physicially and mentally.

If that can't happen, just pray for a good draft.

cato has NEVER scored 17 ppg since HS.

    poster is a dreamer

10 boards and 3 blocks is what we traded for.

He certainly can do it. no one can measure how far cato games in the game of basketball but himself. with the right amount of work ok maybe 17 pts is too high but 14-15 is CERTAINLY realistic. it wont come overnight tho it could take 1-2 seasons. if he would simply dedicate himself to improve yes i think he can do it. but if he shows lack of effort/determination ( which so far has been the case but i would still give him another season) THEN we should ship him out.

this is his FIRST SEASON of any significant player time he had no chance to develop in portland stuck on the bench.

and heypartner i am often a dreamer but guess what some dreams come true.

    fair enough.

But not from low post moves. With a PG like SF, he needs to get his points like Edwards did with Isiah...shooting 10-15'ers in the lane. The rest comes from his dunks.

A 23 yr old 7'0er is not going to learn low post winners against playoff centers one-on-one if he doesn't already exhibit them.

Oh...he IS closer to 7'0" than Hakeem...so let me be the first to say he is 7.

Your right he should develop a jumper although his baseline J looks somewhat promising in very early stages of where it needs to be

also his jump hook isnt bad at all but not very consistent with a couple tweaks it could be effective

rudy T should show him some tapes on how ratliff gets his points.

other than that yah id say go for short Js and dunks.

its not justs the points i wanna see from him its being agressive and playing with heart. hell if he has some 5-22 nights so what at least he is looking to score.

    I Say -

Cato is holding this team back.

    He is not mean enuff.

    Solution?

In his motel room, late at nite, TMass gags him with a towel and holds him to the bed with it. Each of the rest of the Rocks(unseen by him) grab a towel wrapped tightly around a bar of soap and begin to pummel him - HARD. BEAT HIM DOWN.

if that dont work - nothing will.

    Damn Gomer Pile.

I don't see why 15 points, 9 rebounds would be bad. But that's with well above average defense, that's why he can be our center, because he *can* be solid on defense.

I see him improving. All I want from him, is to be a legitimate threat, that teams have to guard from farther away than 2 feet from the basket. As Calvin Murphy calls it, he needs to develop a "Cato" Shake, and be the presence that he was in the preseason. We've seen the shot-blocking, scare the stuffing out of the other team Cato in the preseason, he just needs a fire to be lit under him. HOWEVER, I wouldn't be against trading Cato, for another center of equal (or better) caliber, if the price was right. Camby is a PF, and he couldn't be a starting center night in night out.

    I think a 17-9-2.5 is a little too much

I'd be happy with 12-15 points, 8-10 boards, and 2.5 or more blocks.

This lineup, I foresee becoming guard oriented, with isolation instead of the old, low post, kick it out to the shooter.

Remember back during the championship years, when our frontcourt wasn't the problem, it was the backcourt? Talk about a reversal. Assuming we can sign Mobley, he gets the SG slot, and I'd move Shandon up to Small Forward.

Why did Swift and Woods have to not come out? They'd be perfect on our team, oh well.

Cato probably needs some motivation, to earn his minutes. He wasn't guaranteed time in preseason, with a healthy Hakeem, and a healthy Barkley. He needed the Rockets more than the Rockets needed him. Then Charles and Hakeem are down, then the Rockets need him more than he needs them. He hasn't found a groove. I've seen shades of low post moves, remember the Cato Shake? Cato is a great defender, but we need either a good defending, high scoring PF (Webber please?) or more out of Cato, because other's defense doesn't respect our front court, and forcing Francis to work harder.

CD and Rudy have some decisions to make. Do you keep Shandon/Mobley/Francis together, or part with one of them to improve the front court? Will we keep Mobley here? (Remember-The Rockets can match ANYONE's offer this year if I'm not mistaken, but he doesn't have his Bird's Right's yet) And what to do with Cato?

I believe it'll all fall into place. Did we suspect Pippen would blow up? or Francis would fall into our lap? Just a little luck, and a 4.5 million dollar trade exception could make us a playoff team next year.

    DoD,

I don't know I was hoping for a lot more from that song.. er video.

My favorite video right now is that one by QTip, goes like "...stop and show me what you got..." I don't know, I'm not really listening to the words... But I love the video.

At the expense of being off-topic and Lord knows I hate doing that : Dreamer, the song is "Breathe and Stop". And I love it. [IMG]

Guys this isnt MTV. This is the houston rockets board.

What did u guys think of cato today. i thought he looked a little better. at least he was playing more agressive. bill worrell said he and carol D would try to work on a postup game this summer which at least makes me a little happier.

Well, this isn't MTV, and today's game wasn't basketball either. Both may be off-topic here. LOL! Any commentary about our offense and defense as it played against the mighty Bulls may be moot. Let's play against some NBA teams before we comment on how Cato is improving. [IMG]

    Back on topic ...

Right now, I am not so sure that Cato can average 10 boards a game. He does not appear to have any rebounding instincts. This could be a real big problem ...
