Hindsight is 20 20 in most cases. Do you guys think now looking back on the choice the GOP made, would Huckabee be more appealing to the party? I watch his show from time to time on FoxNews, and he seems to be a stand up guy who has morals and values. I feel he would have made better choices in his campaign. I have a feeling we havent seen the last of him in terms of a bid for the White House. What do you guys think??
Rumor is there are tapes from some of his sermons that would severely damage his appeal to anyone but Repubchristians. Beyond that, the leadership (read: money) of the party would never allow it to happen because while you need "those" people to win elections, you dare not let them take over the party.

He may have an outside shot to win the nomination of the party one day, but that sounds too close to a theocracy for him to ever have a chance in a general election. Even the patently fickle Romney did better than Huckabee this season. His best bet is to follow Pat Robertson's presidential also-ran lead and go back to the tv. On second thought, he'd probably win a Senate seat.
Huckabee is george Bush on Steroids. No centric conservative or liberal would choose Huckabee over McCain.
He is a smarter and more ethical guy than Bush, and is more intellectually curious-seeming that W. But he is the other side of that "fiscal republicans" v "fundamentalist republicans" split - the norquists vs. the dobsons. McCain leans norquist (romney was the purest) while Huckabee leans Dobson (brownback was the purest). That particular partnership ran its course with Bush, and is about to begin a long-overdue civil war in the republican party, IMO. Palin is a throwback attempt to try to revive that doomed and dooming political marriage of convenience, but its over, its a dead marriage. McCains schizophrenic campaign is a symptom of the fact that those sides have grown apart. Huckabee would have been a sweeter guy and a more refreshing and enjoyable republican candidate, but he would have ceeded the entire center to Obama. Or Clinton. But Bush's Deliverance treatment on the country has been the failed proof of concept of that Norquist / Dobson alliance. it's done.
I don't know, but after sending Huckabee a letter criticizing his speech at the Texas Republican Convention, Huckabee sent me a personal letter back. I respect any politician like that.
Huckabee never had a legitimate chance to be the GOP nominee. He has no chance in the future either. If for some miraculous reason Huckabee had been nominated, Obama would win by 15 points at a minimum. We would be talking something like Reagan vs. Mondale.
He wasn't that popular in his home state as governor. IIRC, he formed a committee to explore the possibility of running for senate against Blanche Lincoln a few years ago but opted not to run when he was basically told that he had no shot. Arkansas is a funny place, a lot of people lump it in with the rest of the south and "marryin' yer cousin," but it's a pretty progressive state in terms of the region of the country (I know that's not saying much at all). The state has a Democratic governor, both senators are democrats, and 3 of the 4 representatives are democrats.
I'd take Mitt instead: he's probably got the inside track for '12. If you can have born-again Christians, you can have born again conservatives.
He would have been a dangerous president...Anything he wanted passed, he could just say "I talked to god and this is what he wants."
I met Huckabee when he came to houston at the Westside Tennis Club. He was a great guy! Not to mention I also met Chuck Norris! Had a nice talk with him and got a picture with him!
I might have voted for Huckabee for one reason.... His platform was all for doing away with the IRS and instatuting a national sales tax. If I thought one of our presidential candidate would do that I would have a very hard time not voting for him.
yeah, huckabee seems like a real cool person...but we just cant afford to have another God boy in the whitehouse
