Being a child of the 80s (1980 to be exact), I have fond memories of Dream, but like anyone else on an acid trip (or being a kid high on prozac) those memories come in hazy recollections. Today I was watching ESPN with the Cougars vs. Louisville and I can say only two things...whoa and damn. Vintage NBA was showing a special on someone but it also featured the Rockets and Dream had a nasty dunk on Sam Bowie. Then to top it off, NBA TV showed his 49/25 game againt the Sonics about three days ago. I know of the Dream with the sweet feet but watching Dream as a young rising monster makes me giddy like a kid again. Dream really played with a wreckless abandon from what I saw.
Luckily, I have an original copy (home recorded) of Ralph Sampson's game winning shot against the Lakers in 1986. I hardly watch it though...I want to transfer it to a DVD when the technology is available for home use. What I do remember about the game was (H)Akeem vs. Mitch Kupchak. It was a pretty good fight (as far as NBA sparring matches go). I thought for sure that the Rockets were going to lose. But what amazed me was that Tommy Heinson (who I did not like at all...pro-Celtic) called the last play perfectly. Saying that someone tall should be all over the guy inbounding the ball (which the Lakers cover very lightly) and that the Lakers should watch out for some sort of lob pass. One of the great playoff games of all time...only would have been better if the Rockets had won their first championship against that legendary Celtics team. That was a great time for me...the school year was about to be over (8th grade) and staying up late watching exciting NBA action. I remember fussing at my dad for not staying up to watch it with me. As soon as Sampson hit that shot, I was sprinting to his bedroom to wake him up.
Currently I am trying to gather as many of the Rocket playoff games from our two seasons and also the two Clutch City videos. My friends roommate can transfer videos to DVD!
