You have to pay for those signs? What a ripoff.

    PUBLIC SAFETY
    Vandals, thieves target political signs
Actions happen every election, officials say, and most people aren't caught.

It's presidential campaign season, and signs being stolen from a few residential yards can almost be expected. This year is no exception.

Cedar Park police said Tuesday that they have had three reports from residents who each have had their campaign signs for Barack Obama stolen several times. Officers took fingerprints from a John McCain sign that replaced one of the stolen Obama signs, but Capt. Jeff Hayes said finding a match isn't a priority and could take months.

"I understand people say it's just a sign, but when we get to someone's house and it's the third time it's happened, it gets to be ridiculous," Hayes said. "But most of the time, we don't have a suspect."

Ron Vorndran, who lives in Cedar Park, said he spotted about 10 Obama signs in a ditch near his house on Old Mill Road.

"It just looked like a bunch of kids picked them up and destroyed them so they couldn't be used again," he said.

Law enforcement officials say not many people are caught in the act and if some one is accused of stealing signs, prosecutors would have to prove exactly where the signs came from, said Kevin Stryker, assistant county attorney in Williamson County.

Stryker said stolen signs that are valued at less than $50 could be classified as a class C misdemeanor theft, which carries a maximum fine of $500. Depending on the value of the sign and the number stolen, the crime could cost a thief some jail time, he said

Bill Fairbrother, chairman of the Republican Democratic Party in Williamson County, said he has heard reports of McCain signs being stolen.

"My guess is that this year, we've already had 250 to 300 McCain and Palin signs stolen," Fairbrother said. "But we still have supporters coming back in to get more signs."

In Austin, police said they've received 29 reports of vandalized signs from Aug. 1 through Tuesday, with 19 Obama signs, five McCain signs and five other political signs damaged or stolen.

Edward Scruggs, who heads the Circle C Area Democrats in Southwest Austin, said dozens of people have reported that their Obama signs were torn, taken or spray-painted over the weekend in the subdivision.

He estimates that about 75 homes out of more than 100 with Obama signs in their yards were hit by vandals.

"Whoever did this, it backfires against whatever they were trying to do," Scruggs said.

Law enforcement officials encourage residents to report stolen signs to local police departments, since most signs are stolen in groups, not individually, said Hayes.

I live off of N. Eldridge and grant in the cypress area...anyways I noticed today that some pathetic mccain supporters plastered home-made anti-obama signs all over one of those emergency rails that signals the end of a lane...with some horrible logic, it would be funny if it wasnt dangerous...anyways i will probably run over there tonight and correct their signs for them ;)
