I've been meaning to pick up for the longest time, the album "Surrealistic Pillow" by Jefferson Airplane. It has arguably their 2 biggest songs on it in "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love". But there isn't much else that I know about the Jefferson Airplane other than they covered a David Crosby song called "Triad" that was originally rejected by The Byrds and that they eventually splintered off into Jefferson Starship. I do know that their original lead guitarist (Jorma Kaukonen or something like that) and bass player, Jack Cassady never were a part of Jefferson Starship and/or Starship. And yes growing up as a child of the '80s, Starship's 3 big songs were on MTV and the radio all the time in "Nothing Gonna Stop Us Now", "Sara", and Blender magazine's all-time favorite song, "We Built This City", lol. So, can anyone tell me the best albums or songs by Jefferson Airplane as well as those for Jefferson Starship (you don't have to worry about Starship, we'll just forget about them)? I know their styles are radically different with Airplane being more psychedelic with some folk thrown in while JS went more and more towards an arena rock sound that eventually became pop.
"Surrealistic Pillow" and "The Worst of Jefferson Airplane" are the ones to own. The first was their breakthrough album, the second their greatest hits. Nothing by Jefferson Starship, or Starship, is worth owning.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha, let it be stuck in your head all day! <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/7flrwE-bZVo&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/7flrwE-bZVo&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Pfft. I was a big fan of Nuclear Furniture when I was 12. I still like this song. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Fg2ACDbQ8k4&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Fg2ACDbQ8k4&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
This is the correct answer. And you also need to know that Grace Slick was fuggin' HOT back in the day.
Has any band fallen so far? The distance between White Rabbit and We Built This City is almost incomprehensible. Contemplating this is akin to trying to wrap your mind around what created God. How can something come from nothing?
Surrealistic Pillow is ok, to me the album is hyped up do to it's connection with the summer of love and hippie culture romanticizing. The music is good, not necessarily great. The only other album I can recommend is Red Octopus which came out in the mid 70's.
You could make a pretty good argument for Aerosmith. From Toys in the Attic to Don't Want to Miss A Thing.
Red Octopus is the one album by Jefferson Starship that I have heard is pretty good. All the others are considered to be pretty bland and nothing like what was on the Jefferson Airplane albums. Does anybody have the album by Jefferson Airplane in which "Triad" appears on aka "Crown of Creation"? Yea, Grace Slick definitely had it going on back in the late '60s. What gifford said is something I have wondered too - I also wonder if people think the same about Genesis.
Back in the late 80's, I really DID think they had built a city on Rock 'N Roll . Little did I know. Little did I effin' know.
You can't even consider them the same band. There is a reason that there name kept changing. The talented members of the band left far before the Starship era....
Freedom at Point Zero for Jefferson Starship in the 80s, the Octopus one for the 70s version, and both Surrealistic Pillow and After Bathing at Baxters for the 60s.
Hey Manny The Airplane is before my time and Starship made it unlikely that I would ever go back and find out why The Jefferson Airplane were highly regarded. I don't even like 'White Rabbit' but can appreciate why many do. I will refrain from reviewing them based on their hits. Who knows, maybe someday I'll pick up 'Surrealistic Pillow' and get it. If you do so first let me know. The closest I ever came to being a fan of theirs was with Hot Tuna's album 'Yellow Fever'. That is one F'n heavy album where Jorma and Jack turn it up.
Not much more to add to the above quote. As a long time Genesis fan, it hurt when Peter left but Phil came through like a trooper. And Genesis didn't go through the personnel changes like Airplane (at least during the time I was still listening to the radio)
How's it going, Win! Yea, been awhile...I went ahead and ordered last night a copy of "Surrealistic Pillow" (got it for 4.98 counting shipping but this is the one that doesn't have all the extra tracks on it - it may even be the version that is not re-mastered, I just wanted something cheap). I read that Cassady was a monster on bass, almost like an American version of Entwistle. Another album I picked up and was wondering if you knew much about was the Captain Beyond self-titled album. Captain Beyond was an obscure rock group that had Rod Evans (original lead singer for Deep Purple), 2 former members of Iron Butterfly (including Larry Reinhardt aka "Rhino") and their drummer had played with Edgar Winter. You may not care for that type of music, but I am curious if you have heard of them. Raccoon, You and I may be the only 2 Genesis fans who liked all versions of the band. It seemed like (to me) that there were people who either liked the Gabriel led version only and vehemently disliked the Phil Collins led one. And people who only liked the Phil version and couldn't stand the Gabriel version. "Selling England by the Pound" and "Duke" are my 2 all-time favorite albums by them.
Yeah, Manny, I remember Captain Beyond. I had one of their albums while I was still in Highschool. I think it was a cutout (found in the cheapie bin). I only remember liking one song on it, but that was 30 years ago. They remind me of bands like Atomic Rooster, Elf, Jade Warrior, Spooky Tooth, etc that put out albums with real cool looking art work but I didn't like the music much. Thing is, I might like some of it now as my tastes are much more broad. Afterall, I now think The Carpenters are GREAT
Haha, always with a Carpenters reference, eh. Yea, Captain Beyond was one of those groups that were recommended if you like such and such group which I think in my case was The Faces, Humble Pie, Bad Company, and Free.
