1. Animal Farm has to be my #1 2. 1984 3. To Kill a Mockingbird 4. Inherit the Wind [the ancient black and white version with a young Bill Bixby, Darren form bewitched, Spencer Tracy] Rocket River that is off the top of my head
Bob Roberts Richard III w/ Ian McKellan Citizen Kane Judgement at Nuremberg All the King's Men A Man For All Seasons A Face In the Crowd
I guess from my perspective, there is a difference between a political movie ("Bob Roberts", "The Candidate", "Fail-Safe") and a movie about a political issue ("Inherit the Wind" or "To Kill a Mockingbird"). All of these are fantastic movies, but they are two distinctly different genres, IMHO.
Great film to see a completely different side of Andy Griffith. The entire scene where he judged that girls' twirling competition was unsettling. Also liked Primary Colours; but if Stephanopoulos' memoir or the Clinton section of Bob Woodward's Shadow were ever made into films they would be just as good. Also liked Path to War, George Wallace, and The Girl in the Cafe.
Hands down, JFK. Now, I already know what I'm going to hear: "Full of lies" "Stone's a nut", etc. But in terms of a beautifully edited, visually stunning, and screenplay-compelling movie, this is a top 20 all time, IMHBPWO. All the President's Men The Parallax View The Wedding Crashers (John McCain is in it) My Fellow Americans (James Garner, what can I say) Dave Dr. Strangelove Taxi Driver (tries to assassinate a presidential candidate) Rocky IV
I like this one. I wish the ending was different though. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/GVd1LuadnDk&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/GVd1LuadnDk&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
My favorite? <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/D3Vp9fQ616k&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/D3Vp9fQ616k&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> Right now, as a Republican, I put it at 4-1 Obama. It is looking that bad for me, considering I will have to give up my diatribe here for 6 months, barring a Buffalo miracle, as Bob Costas so eloquently put it 15 years ago. Regardless, we will see what tomorrow brings. Ooh! And now I have to post this fantastic song br SRV's old band: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1tX2dujbJT8&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1tX2dujbJT8&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
I just watched Recount off my DVR because of this thread. Decent enough, but I don't think I'm able to watch it all the way through without simultaneously cringing/retching. Maybe this condition will improve after January 20th. A couple more I didn't see mentioned. In a similar vein to Redford as The Candidate, Henry Fonda as Gore Vidal's The Best Man. Severely underrated. Also, Wag the Dog is the best political movie of and about the machinations of the last few decades in American politics. As a documentary, The War Room is a great look at the innards of political campaigns. Like watching sausage get made, perhaps.
