One day I will sit down with Rudy Tomjanovich and ask him, "why?" A triple double doesn't come every game...especially when you're a 6'3 point guard trying to win rookie of the year. ------------------ "Sources tell me that the Blazers held a team meeting after the two losses..." - "Pistol" Pete Vescey with the inside scoop.
Good question. One that I can only give one halfway-logical excuse to: Anything can happen in three minutes. The game was well in hand for us and there was no reason aside from getting that rebound for Stevie to be out there. You never know, there could have been some kind of freak accident that could have happened that would stunt Stevie's growth as a player or even worse-- end his career. While that scenario isn't bloody likely, it is possible. Better safe than sorry, especially when dealing with the future of your franchise... ... Although that second triple double in his rookie season would look good on his resume... ------------------ WE WILL WATCH THEM FALL... next year, at least. I wondered the same thing. Why not allow a little feeling of achievement for a player? You cant say that Rudy was resting his starters, being that Mobley was still in the game till then end. Or that Mobley was having a finer game, which he certainly was not. So why sit Francis, who has a shot at a triple double, yet play Mobley till the end? Who almost pulled off a triple double with points, rebounds, and turnovers?
It's funny.... if Francis had been injured in the last minute of the game, I think we'd be posting threads with the same exact title as this one. ------------------ NOTHING BUT .NET CLUTCHCITY.NET
I guess Rudy needs a laptop and a line to clutchcity chat. Because I don't think he pays someone to remind him who is close to irrelevant personal resume milestones. and DS...what does mobley have to do with francis being sat down. like he plays pg or something. caught you again with borish anti-mobley talk. jab! ------------------ The farther the Rockets move down the standings, the farther I move down the bleachers.
Are you saying that you take no pleasure in the 2, not 1 since Hakeem was jobbed, quadruple doubles he's scored in his career? Cmon. Francis could get injured at any point in the game. They had that game under wraps since about 1/2 way through the 3rd quarter. If the Rox are going to lose badly this season, Id at least like to have a few moments to enjoy in the offseason. heypartner...Actually there was not an anti Mobley jab in my thread. The point I was making is that the excuse can't be that Rudy was resting his stars, since Mobley was in there till the end. Finishing with 44 mins in the game. Im not sure, but Im pretty positive that Francis hasn't logged that many minutes all year, in a non O.T. game. Actaully these 41 mins are about the most I can remember Rudy giving to Francis. Guess I caught you again in a "quick to jump on anything posted about Mobley" thread. [This message has been edited by Dreamshake (edited March 23, 2000).]
Hey, at least I was right in that RT wouldnt tank a game at home. He probably figured that steve got a career high in points, and that was good enuff for him for tonite. It did look like steve was trying for that last rebound a little too hard, I saw him twice fighting his own team for it.......and at least he did not get injured.....maybe he could take Jason Kidd's place in the Olympics! ROCKS ------------------
Hey Cuttino almost had a triple double too, maybe Rudy was leaving him in there to see if he could get it. Let's review....30 pts 7 rebounds and 8 TURNOVERS !!! The wild child rides again. DaDakota ------------------
Why? Here's why: From the Chronicle: "Francis asked out of the game with 2:20 left, one rebound short of a triple double." ------------------
cool Shanna, Steve just wanted to prove that he's got CLASS. Hard to find in the NBA nowadays. ------------------
Ouch.... I feel pretty stupid. ------------------ "Sources tell me that the Blazers held a team meeting after the two losses..." - "Pistol" Pete Vescey with the inside scoop.
<--from nba.com--> Francis had a career-high 34 points, 14 assists and nine rebounds before asking coach Rudy Tomjanovich to take him out with 2:28 left in Thursday night's game. "We've got a game tomorrow and I wanted to come out after the game was decided to get some rest," Francis said. "I'm more happy to get the win than to get a triple-double." Tomjanovich, who saw his team snap and eight-game losing streak, was impressed. "He was tremendous. He had a chance to get a triple-double and for a minute we kept him in for him to try and get it," the coach said . But when he didn't get it for about a minute he told me to take him out and let someone else get in. That's the kind of kid he is. "He wants to do it the right way and his game speaks for itself." ------------------
I don't think there is anything wront with what RT did. Why risk an injury to your future when the game is in hand. Especially since the Suns' season effectively came to an end 2 games ago when Kidd was injured. Personal stats & awards are for teams that can't win. Hopefully next year we can focus back on winning as a team, rather than stats & awards. ------------------
Thanks cabbage for coming in and admitting you were wrong! Too bad others can't. They just find a reason to bash Rudy, as ridiculous as it may be, and don't hold back. Then when they are absolutely proven wrong, they are nowhere to be found. ------------------ Is it any coincidence that we are the only team mentioned in the national anthem? I didn't think so!
Good to see Rocketman95 not realize that some of us have jobs. Oh and Rocketman. Please direct me to the Rudy bashing going on in this thread. Now I know you guys would defend Rudy from anything. It doesn't even take actual Rudy bashing, for you guys to start complaining about it. God, what if Bill Fitch would of actually won in 86. Some of you would probably be upset if we spoke ill of him.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that the point of this thread? Almost everyone criticizing Rudy because he took Francis out of the game with 2 minutes left? A-No one remembering what happened to Jason Kidd two nights ago. B-No one realizing that Francis asked to be taken out of the game. In these situations, I prefer to give the benefit of the doubt rather than criticizing. Especially when a triple-double, at this, or any other point of the season, while remarkable, means abolutely nothing. ------------------ Is it any coincidence that we are the only team mentioned in the national anthem? I didn't think so!
This story makes me all warm and fuzzy If nothing else, Steve SAYS all the right things! ------------------ http://rocketdavo.tripod.com
