Jellyfish and all of their offspring bands: Imperial Drag, Roger Joseph Manning Jr, The Grays, Jason Falkner, TV Eyes, Moog Cookbook

I agree with Rocket River about Seal. He had a few big hits early then tailed off. His work has been pretty consistent. His last album (the originally titled Seal V) was really good, although I don't think it garnered much notice.

Do they have to be alive or still a producing entity?

    Frank Zappa
    Gil Scot Heron
    Joe Strummer
    Peter Tosh
    Patti Smith
    Warren Zevon
    Joy Division
    Gang of Four
    Matthew Sweet

I'm going to have to second The Replacements. They are the pinnacle of the "almost" band; they almost had the stardom, the fans, and the riches, but they just missed out. No matter what Paul Westerberg has done since - although his most recent album 49:00 was an incredibly pleasant surprise - can tarnish what the Replacements did for the trajectory of music in general.

So many to choose from. I know a lot of people here like fairly straight ahead rock, so here are a few in that vein from Atlantic Canada. I listen to a lot of Canadian indie music so I’ll be your Canadian rep. in this thread.

Sloan is definitely underappreciated as well.
