A buddy of mine and I have decided that we want to make wine. Neither of us has ever made wine or brewed beer. We are still in the gathering information phase, although we have done wine bottle collecting (drinking!) over the past couple of months. Any one have good recommendations on where to get equipment, what equipment to get, and so on. Should we buy a wine making kit or are those pretty crappy quality? I have seen kits online for ~70-100. I have no idea if they are decent or not. I live in Michigan, so we would be using my basement to do the wine making in.

You know, making wine is not like brewing beer. I'd stick to just buying it in the store. Michigan isn't exactly the best place for wine. If you were in California or Oregon, definitely. It'll more than likely be very bad tasting wine.
Do you have any idea what you're talking about, or are you just assuming that since it's Michigan, it's not going to be good? My brother makes wine, and he made it all 4 years he was at Michigan State, and it would always turn out great.
I wish I could brew some homemade beer but I saw Alton Brown do it on 'Good Eats' and it was a whole lot of work and time. I don't even know where I would get things I needed either like hops and such.
You can actually make table wine from Welch's 100% grape juice concentrate. You might want to start there before you invest in a kit.
