re: sarah palin's use of the term 'maverick'...

how does a 'maverick' refer to himself/herself as a 'maverick.' the self-defining undermines the entirety of the force of the term.

sorry, i know this is silly, but it's been bugging me for a while now and i can't believe it's only her overuse of the term that is being ridiculed. i literally cringe every time she says it - it reminds me of the malapropisms that are characteristic to 5 year olds who are eager to incorporate their recently learned vocabulary.

sorry for this useless thread. i had to get that off my chest. i feel much better now.

The funny thing is that one of the descendents of the original maverick is in the ACLU. That's as far left as you can go.

It's a weak attempt to cash in on Tom Cruise's 'hipness'. Which further shows how out of touch they are.

I think it was sort of sad that John McCain did not refer to himself as a maverick last night. I think it means that he is sort of giving up in his old age.

Actually I think Palin might have killed the term "maverick" by taking it overly literally when they told her to use "maverick" as much as possible in the debate.

I think he actually is just smart enough to understand the meaning of the word - essentially that it's not something you call yourself but rather is a label bestowed upon you by others.

He's been referring to Palin as a 'maverick' on the trail, while a bit overdone, is fine. My guess is that in hearing him refer to her as a maverick and in hearing others refer to him as a maverick, in her adolescent overzealousness, she tried to put two and two together and refers to the laughable self-proclaimed 'team of mavericks.'

    It's embarrassing, really.

mccain's insatiable use of "my friends" when referring to the crowd irks me more so than the term maverick.

rrj pointed this out in another thread, and i couldn't agree more.

When Mccain starts a sentence with "My friends" you can be well assured he is not talking to you.

that's really my main gripe. i could be mistaken, but i think the ridicule is directed towards her overuse of the word, not her misuse. I haven't even seen any recognition of this. Maybe it's because the Palin phenomena in and of itself is so ridiculous it is futile to dissect each and every one of her quaint idiosyncrasies? Probably.

Used this in another thread, but I think it works better here.

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/iwNvSW1Ge4M&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/iwNvSW1Ge4M&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Joe Biden said that John McCain is no Maverick, but rather Bush's sidekick. :D

[Best impression of John Stewart impersonating W.]See, I'm a leader and that's what leaders do... leaders like me call themselves mavericks because I'm a maverick... and a leader. Heh, heh.[/Best impression of John Stewart impersonating W.]
