I agree, but that's been the prototype of pg's under adelman. They're more scorers than anything. Just like parker, his assett is attacking and putting pressure on the defense which collapse the defense for kick out or offensive rebounds. He's not going to ever be nash type, but neither is parker. I think u bring him in with landry when u sit tracy or artest. Put brooks in the pick and roll with yao, landry or artest and now the defense is in a nylon bind. He can turn the corner on anyone and that's something the rox will need to utilize.
Don't you guys think that luther head improved? Because I see him going inside hard and he's a lot confidence than last year. What do you guys think?
brooks was very inconsistent out there as a PG even worrell was lamenting about him and some of the passes he made and that he would have to get smarter about making some of those passes--most notably a pass on a fast break he tried to spin around the defender to barry instead of making a much more simpler pass. i think he will improve as he progresses ....brooks will be interesting i dont know how much he will play against the west PGs he may end up seeing more PT against eastern conference teams i dunno. if only he was 6'2 instead of 5'9-5'10. i am pulling for him though oh and thought artest howling and pounding his chest after his tip in around 3 grizzlies was hillarious. seeing wafer, strawberry getting little to no minutes last night dorsey getting limited minutes especially with 2 starters out and another probable preseason player in francis (he played quite a bit in preseason last year and did work his way into the rotation before getting injured --no reason to believe he wont try to do that again after he is cleared to play) out...shows to me that adeleman and staff are trying to really use these games to gauge and test the second unit's chemistry.
I really didn't see any difference in Luther Head's game. I was hoping too, but no. Prediction: Brent Barry will hit a lot of 3's this year!
Luther's had decent games before. i haven't given up on him since some players are late bloomers ... but one pre-season game is too small a sample, especially for Head. he did have some nice moments and a more than decent game. take the training camp reports with a grain of salt.
I go to a&m too and I checked the tv guide listings for the university and it said we should have gotten the game. Hopefully they will fix this for the next game.
Yeah Thats True, hopefully we will see more of what luther head did against the memphis and he did have a decent plays last night that layup was crazy!
I think this is the Luther you will see for basically the rest of his career. Solid shooter, defense is a little suspect. He'll play for a long time in the NBA because teams always need a shooter. I don't think Head is bad by any means, but I'm not expecting him to suddenly become a 10-15 ppg type of player.
I think this game showed that Barry will have a much bigger impact on this team than most people thought when we got him.
I really like a Books, Barry back court. Brent will have a calming influence on Aaron and also provide brooks a nice option to pass to on drive and kick situations.
Weren't you saying that a few years ago, and what did we do? We went out and got MORE superstars and another 50+ win team and Memphis once again went into full rebuilding mode.
Well, not only that, but the team is still "relatively" young. Yao is 28, Tmac is 29, Artest is about to be 29. So they all have about 3 years before you can say that age has caught up to them and they aren't at the level they once were. And even AFTER 3 years, we'll still atleast be on the same level as the Celtics age wise. The cool thing is that Tmac, Yao and Artest's contracts all end within that 3 year span and considering they are going into "last big contract" land, and will probably just take a 3-4 year deal around 10 million each. That frees up space to perhaps sign/trade for another "star" player to speed up the rebuilding phase. You have to realize, if your team is smart about rebuilding and gets a little lucky, the rebuilding phase can be virtually seemless. There will be a 2-3 year span where you aren't a playoff threat, but then you are right back in the hunt. We were able to pull that off in the transition from the Hakeem era to the Yao era. There was never really a span where we were on the level of the Grizzlies. Maybe for one year because of injuries or a new coach, but thats it. And look at teams that have been playoff teams for the past 10 years (Lakers, Rockets, Spurs..etc)... the point of my bringing those teams up is to point out that it IS possible to go from one era of stars to the next without having to spend 3-4 years in the lottery.
Isn't that akin to saying that 12 post-season games against taller opponents is too small a sample? Maybe not - but let's not confuse Head's regular season abilities with his double vanishing act in the playoffs... Head has already done enough to show that he's a rotation quality player in the NBA - he averaged 10.9ppg over the course of an 80 game season in 06/07, hasn't shot below 40% in his career, and averages 2.4 assists per contest. Those aren't all-star numbers by any means, but there's plenty of players in the league who aren't all-stars... I find the Luther bashing a touch ridiculous at times - but then again, if he walks on the court in the playoffs my heart will certainly be in my mouth. But, to be completely honest, I can't think of a better 3rd string SG...
That's because there barely are any and those that exist basically don't play. What people need to remember with Head is that the only reason he got so much burn his rookie season was that we had injuries and an incredibly weak backcourt. Head is not starter material under normal circumstances for any team, even bad teams. It's debatable if he is even backup material given his weaknesses. One thing he does well in addition to shooting is not try to do much. That is worth something in this day and age with so many showboaters and willing chuckers. He also moves well off the ball. So, I guess you could call him two-dimensional. His lack of size and inability to play PG will always cause him problems on defense.
He got a lot of playing time when we had all those injuries, but so did random guys like Richie Frahm, Rick Brunson and Keith Bogans. The difference was that Head actually contributed to wins (the few we earned atleast). No one is saying Head is a starter on every team. But he will be in the NBA for atleast another 10 years. The dude is talented and you can't deny that. If we didn't have Barry, Head fits that role perfectly. Don't get me wrong, Barry > Head, but I'm just saying that it wouldn't be the end of the world if Head had to get minutes at backup 2 for whatever reason.
All players in the NBA have some kind of talent. I agree that Head is a talented spot-up shooter. He also plays within himself and the team concept. He knows he's not good enough to try to do too much. Unfortunately, his overall skill set doesn't fit his build. He has the perfect PG body but completely lacks PG skills. He is not even a combo guard, skill-wise. He is a SG but too small. When he's on the court, you need a PG in the game as well which creates mismatches and a disadvantage for us defensively.
