Basketball-reference.com recently added "advanced" stats for the playoffs. A couple popular topics in Rockets land is how Hakeem stepped up his game in the postseason, and also how McGrady (despite the reputation) has been a great playoff performer statistically.

These stats verify those views. For instance, here are the top 10 players in Career Playoff PER:

    Code:
    [I] Player PER diff RS[/I]
    1 Michael Jordan 28.59 +0.68
    2 George Mikan 28.51 +1.83
    3 Shaquille O'Neal 26.47 -0.67
    4 Tim Duncan 26.04 +0.94
    [B]5 Hakeem Olajuwon 25.69 +2.10
    6 Tracy McGrady 24.66 +1.28[/B]
    7 Charles Barkley 24.18 -0.45
    8 Dirk Nowitzki 24.02 +0.10
    9 LeBron James 23.80 -1.37
    10 Dolph Schayes 23.24 -1.34
    ...
    14 David Robinson 23.03 -3.15

In the last column, I entered the difference between their career playoff PER and their career regular season PER. And I recognize that the two decimal places is hilariously over-specific for such a rough performance estimate, but I added it for whatever its worth. And considering the recent discussion between Hakeem and David Robinson, I thought I'd add his numbers to the list as well.

wow not surprising to Rockets fans but seeing Dream with the biggest jump in the top 10.

McGrady is really high too with the third highest increase.

interesting stuff to think about of course

I'm a bit surprised that David Robinson is that low.

McGrady's 0-7 record proves how useless these stats are.

And to be fair LMFAO at Nowitzki being in the top 50, let alone top 10.

I looked this up once before. Hakeem is #5 all-time for playoff ppg for retired players. Also, I'm pretty sure Hakeem's +4.1 jump in points per game between playoffs and regular season is #1 all-time for *any* players who qualify with enough playoff games (something like 16 games). And if you eliminate his 5 games series with Toronto...he has a +4.8.

durvasa, can you check to see if I'm correct about the #1 ppg jump.

before anyone checks...Ginobody is a minus in PER between regular season and playoffs. So, there you go. The more minutes he gets (~3mpg more in the playoffs) the lower his PER goes down.

People forget what an amazing talent Tracy has been throughout his career, specially in Orlando and his first year with the Rockets. The man is still a great talent but injuries are taking their toll on his body. It makes me wonder what T-Mac we are getting the next 2 years.

Here is to hoping a 'ship will make everything else null. :D

Your constant T-Mac bashing is really getting old.

I'm not bashing McGrady, I'm just pointing out how useless these numbers are.

Would you really rather go to war with McGrady than Magic Johnson, Bill Russell, Larry Bird, Wilt Chamberlain, etc.?

While these stats don't tell the whole story, neither does 0-7.

The proper question to ask is, would you rather go to war with the supporting cast of McGrady, Magic Johnson, Russell, Bird, Chamberlain, etc..

Those numbers validate the point that regardless of how well an individual does, it's a team sport and you need a complete team to go anywhere.

Robinson was the king of players that put up massive stats against weak competition and disappeared for big games. Like when he put up 70+ against the Clippers to cheat his way to a scoring title. Dwight Howard does similar (although very young, I am not bashing the guy), he will grab 20 boards against the Hawks. But if Yao or Sheed come to town he is shut down.

    That's a fair point.

I'd still bet my bottom dollar that any of those guys could get out of the first round with any of McGrady's playoff supporting casts.

i love that basketball reference is always updating. they got the playoff box scores back to 93-94 a while ago, then got them back to 91 (at least the finals), and now they've got playoffs advanced, which i had been hoping for for a while. now if they can just take playoffs and regular season box scores back to hakeem's rookie year (durvasa, any reason they've been at the 86-87 season for as long as i can remember?), that would be about all i need. that and being able to search playoff box scores again, which i can't seem to find.

I like how your ragging about the 0-7 record doesn't include Yao who didn't even make this list.

Clearly at least try and bag someone properly without leaving out the facts.

i think tmac is a talent NBA player . tmac met with too much injure from nba and his family but now he is still stand . he is a man. McGrady's 0-7 record can't say anything, it is just before. he is not old and he has time to own his chanpionship which i believe

Yeah, I'd bet a million dollars on something that has no chance of being proven either way, too.

Yao is what, 0 for 3? That's hardly a large enough sample size to indict him.
