We just had lay offs at our company. Even though our product generates cash we still had layoffs on our team. The severance packages were terrible as well: A bunch of high tech companies give 3 months severance. I heard ours gave three weeks. Corporate America sucks.
I've been laid off for a month and a half and have been trying hard to get a new job. No dice. I had a decent severance and money save up but still. Getting laid off hurts... not being able to find a new job hurts more.
Try to locate a head hunter if you were laid off. They've got the most up to the date leads and can land you interviews quick. I've had several disgruntled friends who contacted headhunters to leave their previous jobs.
Many companies have a hiring freeze right now, so it will not be easy. However, it can be the sense of urgency you need to get your butt into gear and get out of a company that doesn't appreciate you. I was underpaid for years, even though I learned new skills that would put me at a higher salary grade. I tried half-heartedly to get a new job. Last year, after the company went bankrupt, I went through 2 other jobs before landing where I am now. My new company doubled my salary and has taken good care of me.
I forgot to mention that I got the job through a head hunter. Like the others said, head hunters can be great. I didn't pay any cash. The company had a contract with the head hunter to hunt for them. I found the job on one of those job websites, careerbuilder or monster.
Sucks to hear that, man. You might need to relocate. Where are you? Some cities/areas have way better job markets than others.
Are you an accountant? If you don't mind my asking. FYI, most of the ads placed on internet job sites are placed by headhunters, not companies.
If you post your resume/info on online sites like Monster, be prepared for tons of 'job opportunities' with 'financial positions'. Many of these are pyramid schemes, so be wary. You'll also get called by headhunters, which may be a good thing.
Yeah, its a far too common part of business now...I'll be gone at my job at the end of the year...terrible time to be looking, but I figure, I'll have plenty of time to play my PS3 and be a bum...
I hate those temp to perm jobs...I sorta have to fake out like I care about working for the probation period until I get hired permanently, then I can slink back to slacker mode...
If they have to layoff at my job, they have already announced the senior people will be the first to be shown the door.
