Over the years, I have done business with every major long-distance carrier out there. Sprint, MCI, AT&T, plus SWB, SBC, Ameritech and the rest of the garbage. They've all screwed me over at one time or other. I'd sign up with one and then they would stiff me. I'd install a boycott on that company and move on to the next one. My problem is I've run out of the big companies; they've all been boycotted.

I had returned, most recently, to MCI, despite my boycott. They recently screwed me again. I know there are a lot of little telecom companies out there and I plan on going in that direction now. But, it'll take some research on my part to find someone I can trust and who can give me some decent service. Step 1 of that research is to ask for recommendations.

So: Does anyone have any experience with little telecom companies they can share? Are there any companies you can recommend?

What is the best deal on long distance. Like Juan Valdez I gave up and went back to ATT , but I know I can do better. Maybe one of those 1-800 #'s or something.

I pay for my father-in-law's phone bill, and he uses "Sage Telecom". I don't know much about them or how much of Texas they cover (he lives in Amarillo), but he seems to like them. It's a flat rate for local calls, with 60 minutes a month of free long distance, and 7 cents a mintes after 60. He stays under 60 minutes (barely), so I pay $35.88 a month total. Seems to be a good outfit.

Go cell for long distance. Just turn it off when you don't want to be bothered or in a movie theatre.

    MCI is evil!!!!

I'm happy with ClearChoice. .05 24/7. No monthly fee. In-state varies depending on your state. 3 minute minimum call, but they don't charge unless the person or machine picks up (some ripoff companies charge if the call went through without a busy signal)

I'm with Joe-Joe. If you're single, cell phones might be a good way to go. They've become very cost-effective, and if you have any use for one, it makes sense to do most of one's long distance on it.

Anyone have a non-cell phone suggestion? I don't own a cell phone and don't plan to. Frankly, they are the work of the devil (even if they are really useful to have sometimes). (1) They cause cancer (I'm sure of it). (2) They cause car accidents. (3) I'll still need a land-line for my dial-up connection (I go with with cable or DSL instead and make up for reductions in phones cost with increases to my internet costs, I suppose). (4) My home number doubles as my wife's work number and she would lose business with a change (maybe it's possible to keep the number, but that's not what I'm hearing).

Or does no one else have a land-line anymore?

No, idiots who don't know how to drive cause accidents, not cell phones.

I maintain a landline also for local calls and the internet.

I never thought I would buy a cell phone. I didn't want to be accessible 24/7. I just keep it off when I don't feel like talking to anyone and thus can say it was off when I ignore someone. If you're reading this, I'm talking about someone else.
