Legendary actor Paul Newman dies at age 83

    The Associated Press
Article Launched: 09/27/2008 06:56:20 AM PDT

NEW HAVEN, Conn.—A spokeswoman for screen legend Paul Newman says the actor has died at age 83.

Spokeswoman Marni Tomljanovic says Newman died Friday of cancer. No other details were immediately available.

Newman was nominated for Academy Awards 10 times, winning a regular Oscar in 1987 for "The Color of Money" and two honorary ones. He was equally at home in comedies such as "The Sting" and dramas such as "Hud."

He sometimes teamed with his wife, Joanne Woodward, also an Oscar winner for the 1957 film "Three Faces of Eve."

I drove by his house last weekend when I was in Westport (its not hard to miss and the locals always point it out).

Great actor. I loved The Verdict.

The greatest actor of all time. Better than Pacino and DeNiro.

Everyone could see it coming. Still sad.

I just bought a jar of his Spaghetti sauce the other day and was going to try it for the first time.

Always a sad day when we lose an icon. I really admired Newman for the way he lived his life.

So many great films, I suspect many on this board have never seen his best work.

Terribly sad. What a great career he had. One of the true originals, the one thing that stands out to me is that he only won a single Oscar for best actor, and that rather late in his career. Newman should have had at least 3. And what a philanthropist! Started on a whim, his brand of organic food products provided over $250 million to charity! Incredible.

Rest in peace, Mr. Newman. You earned it.

I was just thinking the other day how I would like to see him in another movie before he dies.

I agree. Difference between him and DeNiro is Newman could play the roles opposite the legendary starlits like Elizabeth Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Quick: name a starlit who played opposite DeNiro. He just couldn't do those roles, and Newman could do everything else as well.

my fav: a young Newman in Long Hot Summer with Joanne Woodward and Orson Wells
