This doesn't make a lot of sense, though (and one of the sources was a House Republican). We had leaders from both parties saying there was a bipartisan framework. I'm sure there was more to be done - but everyone seems to agree that the House Republicans suddenly sprung a whole new template on the table on Thursday evening. They've been negotiating this for a week - if they planned to go a whole different direction, these guys should have made that known to someone, somewhere beforehand. That's the problem here - if they were on board and just needed small changes, that would be the "no deal in place" scenario. These guys just intentionally (or incompetently) threw a wrench in the whole system at the last minute.

There was a deal agreed to by leadership on the House & (w/the exception of Shelby) Senate Committees & the White House - that is from direct quotes from Committee members from both sides. Who else do you have to ask?

The house republicans said there was no deal.

The problem is that the Republican party is in complete disarray right now. The house reps are revolting against Bush, and they are simultaneously rejecting McCain as a leader too (who, incidentally, has done absolutely nothing to help the situation other than play presidential politics with appearances). They are trying to return to their conservative roots and are being pressured by their base, but they are utterly disconnected from the situation and don't realize how serious the situation is--they really do not believe that this situation is bad enough that party politics has to take a back stage now for the national interest. It's just a really, really bad confluence of events that is pushing towards a worst case scenario unless we can get someone to actually step up and lead.

The leadership is in recognizing a political trap when it's laid out, and working to get around that.

Some people think it is bad enough others don't. Only history will judge who is right.

Wrong, basso. They don't have enough votes to get it through the house yet. Snap yourself out of this cognitive dissonance mode and open your eyes to reality. They NEED the house republicans, or at least a sizable portion of them, to get on board--or this thing will fail catastrophically.

I, for one, am hoping and praying that history doesn't prove me right. This is one type of history I DON'T want to be part of.

Debate is limited in the House. No one can filibuster.

No, the problem isn't filibustering. The problem is that they just won't get enough votes, period.

This is what a nation in crisis without leadership looks like.

basso, I seriously can't figure out why you make these inane posts. I know you are a very intelligent person, yet you really think people can't see through this? You know very well why the Democratic leadership won't pass the Bush Plan without a majority of the Republican Congress. The McCain campaign and the campaigns of those GOP members running for reelection, who are scared ****less that they are going to lose, would immediately blame the Democratic Congress for everything that is wrong, even though the GOP Congress and Bush are largely responsible for it.

It's not going to happen, basso, although I'm sure it's a wet dream of yours.

I am totally against the bailout. If it takes a few years of pain to make people realize that they should be responsiable for their actions, so be it.

The whole "Borrow and Spend" culture is the root cause of all this mess, the real pain in economy may help to change this culture. The bailout will only set up a larger crisis in the future.

So I am glad McCain can put this on hold for a while.

Watch carefully, there is nothing up my sleeve, now look over there, poof...

I see what you did there.

    Magic: classic misdirection.

Unfortunately, when you use the same trick over and over, everyone figures it out.

This isn't what's being reported on CNN, et al. The story out of Capitol Hill is that they have the votes to pass it, but that they won't do it without 100 Republican votes to share the blame when it becomes obvious that Congress just blew a lot of the taxpayers' air into a balloon with a hole in it.
