But if he's going to be a restricted FA anyways (I'm not sure if that's the case, but supposing it is), then why bother renegotiating the contract early? I must be missing something, because I don't understand what our motivation would be to do that.
1. I separate Francis from the equation. 2. I think we want to compete for a championship every year. Maybe right now haggling over 1-2m to get under the luxury cap is a major pain, but at this point, we're talking Justin Reed money. Meanwhile, Landry at 3.5m versus Landry at 7.5m (or more?) in 2 years could potentially be the difference in using the MLE or not. Or our own willingness to resign Artest.
Let's get this straight once and for all: Steve Francis was a Les Alexander signing. It was a nostalgia signing, a move for the fans. Les told Morey to offer the contract, Morey did, and yes, it shackled Morey of what he could offer to Landry AND Deke. (Deke complained of the lowball offer given to him last year). Steve Francis signing = caused more negatives then positives
I understand what you're saying, but reward, creating loyalty and showing that we wanted him here would have been enough of a reason to attempt renogotiation IMHO. I just think this guy is more valuable than people think and under a $700k scenario I'd have thrown enough money to turn his head. And I believe Morey would have. And I know you've already probably provided enough statistical analysis to debunk my guesses into Morey/Les' thought processes. But just my take.
One thing I know I'm very ignorant about when it comes to the NBA is salary cap stuff and how contracts are negotiated. It's just not something I pay a lot of attention to, so maybe your thoughts on this are exactly right. I don't know, is it common practice for teams to renegotiate contracts of young role players who are going to be restricted FAs? I mean, I'd get it if there was a real chance the player could leave, but if that's not going to happen I just don't see the incentive in doing that. I think the players and their agents understand it's a business, and teams are going to look out for their interests.
Quite pleased with the signing at that price. Good and shrewd work by Morey. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if the Rockets included Landry in some kind of deal if the right offer was on the table. If not, I'm just as happy to keep Carl and watch him do his thing.
I'm not worried about the knee. If the knee is screwed then we are only on the hook for 2 years...and $3M really isn't that much. What other PF could we have gotten with $3M? Plus we drafted Dorsey just in case...so let's go!!!
Morey is the One! Great job. I honestly didn't think it was going to happen but very glad it did. Welcome back to the team Tooth!!
Alston-Brooks-Francis Tmac-Barry-Head-Strawberry (non-guarranteed) Artest-Battier-Harris(guarranteed?) Scola-Landry-Hayes Yao-Dorsey Is this right we have 14 guys under contract? And we're bringing in Von Wafer and a couple other longshots in for training camp. Am I missing anyone?
Morey should have waited for at least a few more days to match this offer, come on, less than 24 hrs? He made it look like a no brainer, it tells Carl that Rockets knew their offer aint fair, they knew they were trying to lowball him, not smart ....
