I'm pretty sure that goes without saying. It's not like Morey's concerned about his wallet when it comes to the Luxury Tax. Morey is the guy that Les pays to save him money. Naturally Morey will tell Les what his best option is and advise Les what to do.
I'd like to think that he's addressing it this soon because training camp (media day) starts on Monday and Carl should know whether or not he should plan to attend.
Artest will affect Landry's court time if he slides over to PF on occasion. On offense, this would be dynamic for the Rockets but would leave us weak at rebounding. Artest would destroy most PFs off the dribble.
Many will say I'm being a pessimist, but if the rox are going to match, why hold a presser about it? Did they ever get the knee looked at like they had mentioned? The hawks took all of a couple of hrs to match the grizz offer and that was for 54m, why are the rox hesitating? Just a thought. If they feel like they can get the same 20pts and 16 rebs out of Scola and Dorsey/hayes, then maybe they might let him walk.
Yep. Morey was just letting the process work out. The only way to be sure you won't overpay in this situation is to wait until SOMEbody signs him to an offer, then match. Morey knew all along nobody would offer Landry crazy money (especially after Morey made public the team's "concerns" about his knee). That knee was never the show-stopper they made it out to be. And the press conference? To show Carl some love and let everyone know the Rockets were never going to let him get away. Very smart. Nicely played, Daryl. Every move this guy makes seems very well thought-out. Glad Les was smart enough to grab him before anyone else did.
People, do not forget that Morey has stated throughout the entire offseason that he plans to match any offer to Landry as long as it doesn't exceed the MLE. Why do you think we haven't used any of the MLE yet? because we were saving the whole thing for Landry, just in case. It would make absolutely no sense if we weren't going to match.
The only possible reason for not matching is the knee-- if they are worried enough about the long-term future of the knee, they may not match. Otherwise, there is no reason not to match. Salaries can be easily moved to get rid of the tax. Also, it doesn't matter if the team has too many guys who can play. You keep the assets you have and try to get something out of the spare parts. Look at Novak. They have no place for him and yet he was brought back just to be traded for minor trade consideration.
I wonder if Morey is going to make more small moves before the regular season starts. I can't see him not moving someone. I know everyone is talking about Head but you don't really have any other good shooter out there besides Barry. And with Barry, we don't know how healthy this dude is going to be.
If the Rockets are going to match, they should match TODAY. The reason: to get Landry's knee taken care of. I'm guessing that Morey, Les and the rest of the Rockets' front office had numerous conversations last night about whether the match. There is nothing new that the Rockets can find out in the next five days that would give them anymore information (unless the Bobcats had Landry take a physical before signing him). At this point, it is a Yes/No decision. If the answer's going to be "Yes", then the team should match and immediately request that Landry get his knee scoped. Since he would then be a Rockets player once again and under a multi-year guaranteed contract, I don't think that Landry will mind so much about the scope. The Rockets want to get as much information about Landry's knee NOW so that they can determine what is the best course of action to take. The last thing the team wants is for Landry to re-injure the knee in training camp or to just keep sitting out practices before eventually getting the scope done. If I were Morey, that would be the single biggest reason to match today rather than to wait. Of course, that assumes that all the discussions have already been had with Les and the front office about the injury concerns.

In fairness to Landry, there was little upside to possibly exposing a worse injury that would KILL his market value. He ended up making the right business decision and got a fair market value deal that was in excess of what the Rockets were offering. Both sides did their job; and the result will be quite fair as well. There is no more negotiation. Landry must play under the terms of the offer sheet he signed yesterday. The only question is whether he plays for the Bobcats or the Rockets.
I don't think his knee is that bad. I think they used the knee to their advantage during this off season. Landry could of gotten more money I think. I wouldn't pay him more personally but I do believe other teams would of though.
