scoring??? we need a center to block shots and rebound. yao, tmac, artest, scola... we have scoring options. we needed landry and dorsey as physical presences who could do the dirty work cuz yao still has problems being that presence down low. he is no hakeem when it comes to defending. thats also why they wanted deke back.
how can you not care about blocks??

I don't see anybody overreacting.... I mean who gives a rats ass if he isn't going to play more than 20mpg...he didn't do that last year either and he still made a impact, did he not?

For as deep as this team is, it still isn't deep in the "scoring off the bench" area.......Landry fills that and fills it in spades. He is the afterburner on this "ship", he's the guy that can come into the ball game and instantly ingnite the entire team with electrifying dunks or grabbing big rebounds. He's a player that doesn't need to dominate the ball or log big minutes to make a impact in the game and on a team.......those types of players are crucial to any real "contender" and 3 mil. per is a bargain for that type of impact.

Also will people please stop trying to say Dorsey = Landry...that is completely r****ded, it's stupid. Dorsey does not = Landry. Dorsery can dunk and rebound....great, but unlike Landry, Dorsey doesn't have a J and can't hit a freaking FT. Plus Dorsey hasn't even proven that he can play at this level...he could be a total flop, so will people stop comparing Dorsey to Landry.

Well, we'll have until the trading deadline to solve the Luxury Tax, and we won't have to pay it until the end of the year. Typically, its also gone up 10% each year, so there will probably be more room.

The biggest advantage of the vets minimum, is that the league gives them more than half the money back.

But, Deke is truly worth more than the vets minimum.

It would be nice if he could get another big donation for his hospital to offset the salary, but he'll certainly be looking for more ... and worth whatever we have to pay him. We can't get another Center of his caliber for the kind of money we'll pay Deke, even if he's 100 years old.

Also I see many early game blowouts in this teams future. If we can hold those leads with our bench like Landry we can keep our starters healthy and possibly rested going to the playoffs

LT for 2008-09 has been set at $71.15M. They'll need to find a taker for either Head, Francis, Hayes, or some combination of those players to get back under. Firstly a team will need to want those player/s and then have a TE to trade for them.

If Deke signs for the vet min he'll be paid around $1.2M but only counts towards the cap for a figure in the $700K range. So under LT he'll cost around $1.4M. If he gets paid the vet min amount of $1.2M plus 1c it'll cost the Rockets $2.4M. A $2M salary would cost them $4M.

/\ If Landry's salary is $3M for this season, then including Dorsey, but not Deke. The Rockets will be around $3.13M over LT.

Man Rockets' owner should have plenty of money with Yao and China....they shouldn't be worrying about luxury taxes...period!! This is the one team in teh league that can afford that because i am sure they earned a lot of $$ over sea.

ouch, i don't think it's possible to get under LT later then. Luther doesn't even make that much.

The rockets had the fourth biggest market in the nba before yao's arrival. now were like the seventh. so the yao has made the rockets ton of money is overrated.

    It's possible but not likely.

Chucky Atkins just went under the knife for knee surgery. The Nuggets have a TE from the Camby trade...

If the Rockets can get lucky out of this situation, follow that through with a Head for Diener trade, and then go into the season with a 14 man squad. That's a scenario to get under LT.

Rockets should be able to re-sign Harris after a quarter of the season has passed if he's still available as the min is pro-rated.

I think that this is the year where we will and should go over the cap, I'm sure one year without any league profits is acceptable, lets face it at least we aren't the New York Knicks :D

i don't think Morey will pass up on this 3 mil per year on landry is not a too big of a risk. at least he is one year rental with 2nd year as cap releif to some teams.

I'm pretty confident Morey will match. He didn't sit on the MLE all offseason waiting for an offer sheet to match before he could bring in Landry, Dorsey and Mutombo -- just to pass on a reasonable contract in the end. If he was going to pass on $3M/season, he should have signed Dorsey and Mutombo a long time ago.

EDIT: And kudos to Buddy for managing to get more money for Landry in the end. People said Landry should just bend over and take the contract the Rockets were offering -- the paper said that was $5.4 million over 3 years, which is a paltry $1.8M/season.
