If you are 22 months in on your current contract or out of contract, then the phone is $179 (plus upgrade fee of $18). Online pre-orders require you to select either a $25 or a $35 data plan, but as CSR explained to me, you can drop the data plan when you get the phone. The data plans "required" are bundles, as it is actually a $19 data plan and then $5 for 400 messages. On my family plan, I had a couple of lines that were out of contract so I eligible for the online discount - otherwise my best price was $299.
I ended up not ordering the phone because of the data plan. If you drop the data plan, how are you getting the internet on the phone? That has always been one of my holdouts, I did not want to pay the extra $20 per line for internet connection. Was the $35 data plan in addition to the $20/per month internet?
Without a data plan, you can access the internet via Wifi. Most places where I would use the phone have open wireless networks - but I agree, I would be missing out on some functionality by not having a data plan. I am not sure, but I believe that the $35 data bundle is broken down as $20 for data and $15 for unlimited domestic messaging.
Ok, that is what I originally thought. Without the data plan, the phone would lose the functionality that I want. I was very jealous of the people that had phone/internet connections post Ike, I was in serious internet withdrawal until Sunday when my power came back on. The only place I have open wifi is my house and I would be using my laptop there, so that makes the data plan a necessity for me. I am still trying to justify it, due to the whole Ike thing. Not a good reason I know. The truth is it looks like a fun toy. Hmmm, to be responsible or not???
sounds like the only people that look forward to this ugly thing are the ones that cant get an iphone.
I believe the idea is to see the street while you're not there. Say you live in Houston and you want to check out the street view of Time Square. You go to google maps, click on street view, and instead of having to navigate the 360 view of Time Square with your fingers on the phone, you can just move the phone around as if you were there.
