My elderly neighbor's tree broke and is hanging over and intermingled with the powerline in my driveway. Surprisingly, the power got restored and nothing was done about the tree. I can't get my car up the driveway and am worried it is going to fall and I will lose power again. My neighbor doesn't seem capable of dealing with it, so I am trying to figure out how to fix the problem.

A couple of questions.

Will Centerpoint take care of this?

If not, does anyone here know of a bonded tree company that would do the work in the 77096 area?

Thanks.

Call Centerpoint. It is there responsibility. You do not want to do that work yourself.

You will probably have to have a tree removal company come out since it's up in the yard. If it falls I believe you will have to hire an electrician to come out since it's not the main power line by the street. Your neighbor should be responsible since it is his tree.

Here's your answer:

HE should take care of it, IMHO. Why do you say he would not be capable? Would you be taken for a sucker, or for being a good Samaritan? Therein lies the problem. You're the one with the need (to get your car out), so ask nicely and be a good neighbor. Just explain to him how you didn't notice it was HIS tree until now. Don't lie, but explain that your work/school/things to do are now on hold because of the tree.

I have read this several times and see no reference to the sex of your neighbor. Is your neighbor male or female?

My neighbor is female. She is willing to help pay, it is just she isn't able to call around and find out the answers. I feel bad for her, but am worried the trees will continue to drop further down. I don't want to lose power again. Frankly, I am surprised that my power got turned on at all because of the trees.

From the Centerpoint web site:

Demarc Info

How customers can help

*
Customers who do NOT have power should call Customer Service at 713-207-2222.
*
While CenterPoint Energy will cut trees and limbs away from power lines and the electric service drops to the homes, homeowners are responsible for the removal of debris left by tree trimming crews who are assisting with power restoration efforts.

FAQ

How much does tree trimming cost?

Centerpoint Tree Trimming Contractors

I suggest contacting Centerpoint and reporting the problem. It is possible that they have a crew still in you area and they can swing back by to handle the tree problem.

Thanks for the input. I should have just called Centerpoint right away. I just got off the phone with Centerpoint and they were very nice. Since it is a hot wire, they reported it on the hot wire line and should have a crew out soon.

I used to work for Centerpoint. Never touch any part of a tree that is touching a down powerline, hot or not. Backfeed and induction can still put you on your ass.

as previously stated, this is Centerpoints responsibility.
