Astros replace Class A Salem with Class A Lancaster, California

I guess the 'Stros want to increase their West Coast presence.

HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros announced today that the club has signed a Player Development Contract (PDC) with the Class A Lancaster JetHawks of the California League. The initial agreement is for two years through the 2010 season and includes an automatic two-year extension through 2012 with the Lancaster management team, to be signed by the Astros and JetHawks at the end of 2009. The announcement was made by Assistant General Manager and Director of Player Development Ricky Bennett.

Lancaster will replace the Salem Avalanche of the Carolina League as the organization's High Class A affiliate. The JetHawks recently completed their 13th season and are the first California League affiliate for the Astros since Modesto in 1964.

"We are looking forward to building a great relationship with the City of Lancaster and the JetHawks," said Bennett. "The Lancaster franchise is a first-class operation with a tremendous facility, and creating a new fan base on the West Coast over the next four years is an exciting opportunity for our players and staff."

Lancaster spent the last two seasons as an affiliate of the Boston Red Sox (2007-08) and has previously been affiliated with the Arizona Diamondbacks (6 seasons, 2001-06) and the Seattle Mariners (5 seasons, 1996-2000).

With the addition of Lancaster, the Astros list of affiliates is now as follows: Triple A Round Rock (Pacific Coast League), Double A Corpus Christi (Texas League), Class A Lancaster (California League), Class A Lexington (South Atlantic League), Short-Season Class A Tri-City (New York-Penn League), and Rookie League Greeneville (Appalachian League).

Lancaster is a total launching pad. Definitely not a good place to judge talent.

To play against who? There's no A league in Texas. If Sugarland is getting a team, it will have to either be AA and join the Texas League or become an independent league team.

On the move...well, at least Koby Clemens gets to play in California now.

I wouldn't be surprised if Clemens was at Corpus this season.
