Correct me if I'm wrong, but most of the southern Democrats were conservatives right?

I believe Bush Sr. was a southern Democrat before he ran for president. I think when he was getting Texas into the oil game way back when. (It's been way too long since I took any type of US History, but I think that's what we learned)

They didn't like civil rights and became Republicans.

Rove killed them off. He wanted Repubs instead of conservative Dems. The whole redistricting in Texas was aimed, in part, at replacing Con Dems with Repubs.

Redistricting also killed them off as a bunch of southern states drew districts that were favorable to repubs overall.

Carter was elected in 76. Do you have any real response or just like to scream racism since you don't know anything?

Not really conservative at all. Pro-Union, raised taxes etc.

    Bush was never a Democrat.

    That was a real response.

There is this cool website called google. Log onto it and type "southern strategy". Your answer is Nixon & Negroes.

Wrong, your answer is the real response.

    Thanks BTW.

I'm reading up on it now. I am amazed the turnaround in recent history.

You beat me to it. Some of the movement to Republicans started when LBJ was president but the "southern strategy" began the flood.

The Democratic Party became the party of white supremacy after the civil war because the Republicans had supported the Union. For example, Georgia didn't have a Republican governor after Reconstruction until Sonny Perdue won. So from the 1870s-2003 Georgia was governed by Democrats. Also, the Democratic Party was important for maintaining the 'white primaries ' until the early 1960s, which essentially kept blacks from voting or running for office in states like Texas, Georgia, Alabama, etc. As the civil rights movement faded into the background and the Reagan Revolution hit Washington, so-called 'blue dog' Democrats faded away.

You might also want to read Roe Rage by Robert Post and Reva Siegel. Basically, Weyrich and other big time Republicans went to religious leaders like Falwell and used abortion as a 'wedge' issue to split Catholic and Protestant working class voters away from the Democrats and effectively form 'the New Right.'

Yeah I hate the abortion issue. It reminds me of gun control. Politic just trying to show that they have done something well or something. Oh look how many lives i saved!!!

    Who gives a crap!

    ^Weird.

Basically, the Democrats lost the South because of civil rights. What was left of the Blue Dogs left the picture from age and from the overall shift towards more partisanship in national politics (along with redistricting, Rove, DeLay, etc.)
