While it's believable to me that people would refuse to vote for Obama because he's black, I doubt if those non-votes would add up to a significant number. Many of those voters would likely be voting for McCain/Palin anyway.

I doubt that people will refuse to vote for McCain/Palin simply because Palin's a woman. But some people will vote against them because Palin's a religious fundamentalist. Those non-votes probably won't add up to a significant number. Most of those voters would probably be voting for Obama anyway.

At any rate, we have an election that has included a woman and a black man fighting for the nomination of a major party, and now we have the possibility of a black man being president or a woman being vice-president (though there has been a possibility of a woman being veep before).

But will America ever be ready for a non-religious president? I'm not talking about a different religion, or an avowed atheist ... but someone who is simply not religious.

    Can you imagine that happening?

So, should I gather that neither of you can imagine a non-religious president? Or, rather, that neither of you would ever, ever, ever want to even see the possibility of that happening?

ANSWER THE QUESTION SENATOR IROC it.

No one's participation is required. I'm curious if people have considered the question.

I think McCain is not particularly religious, but he acts like it now.....

At some point, religion will be outdated as far as candidates go, but I think that is a long way off.

IMO the US is farther away from electing the type of candidate you suggest exists than electing an equally fictitious Martian.

    All politicians pander to religion.

Many of us have seen that some are sincerely faking it along the way, as indicated by their character.

Is that the answer you were seeking, thadeus?

The answer is "No" with the caveat that "I doubt we'll ever see a candidate for POTUS make a claim of being non-religious (at least as you imlpy... an absence of a second thought given to it, up or down)."

Ruling out even "atheists" as you do... I don't know what you would even call that individual. It seems clear to me that every person I have ever come in contact with has some contemplation of the spiritual or religious ideas.

Seriously. It probably won't happen until we are electing the President of United Space.

I think it's a relatively recent phenomenon that candidates have campaigned on their religiosity to get more votes. And voters aren't any more religious now, I don't think, then they were 30 years ago.

it was a big deal that kennedy was catholic, this is not a recent phenomenon because in the past it was just assumed a serious candidate was a protestant. this is a legitimate topic, we live in a nation founded by puritans and it has its ramifications and legacy

Until being religious gets you less votes than being non-religious, we'll see religion based campaigning and religious candidates.
