    WARNING

Not for the faint of heart... :(

    http://getactive.peta.org/campaign/iowa_pigfarm_abuse2

PETA is extreme (and often annoying) in a lot of their tactics, but you have to give them credit for bringing light to matters like this. Sickening and despicable.

And if you watch the video, don't say I didn't warn you.

Whoa RR, is that all you got out of that video?

True, PETA is not very high on my "due respect" list, but that video was way too much. I could only watch the first 30 sec or so.

In this case I'll have to give PETA this one. There is absolutely no reason to treat a defenseless animal that way...NONE.

    Good work by PETA.

Even though, in general, they're a bunch of annoying, condescending pricks, you have to applaud any citizen group that undertakes a risky initiative like this.

I remember in my Negotiations class we watched a documentary called "The American Dream" about the Local P19 union strike at the Hormel Foods plant in Austin, Minnesota.

I've seen worst things happen to people, and most folks don't get up in arms about it....

I'm sorry I don't care too much for animal rights.

Don't care a whole lot about animal rights, and I don't like PETA as a general rule, but...

...yeah, that was pretty bad. :(

Don't forget the facts that they give money to terrorist organizations, take animals from shelters just to euthanize them, and compare farms to slavery and the holocaust.

I'm shocked that Hormel abuses the animals that they are preparing for slaughter.

    sorry . . . I didn't watch it
It was just an off the cuff remark about the Organization

After the whole Killing Animals is Equal to the Holocaust and Lynchings thing . . . I have absolutely nothing but loathing for them

I support human treatment of animals, but PeTA is freakin' nuts. However, they do make a good point once every blue moon.

That video was horrible. The piglet parts were the worst.

PETA euthanizes 90% of the animals they "rescue."

Real opposite of what they tout.

So you can kill 'em... just don't eat 'em, right, PETA?

Sorry, I won't stop eating meat because some folks have anger and abuse issues at the plant.

EDIT: The video is severley disgusting... but that surely is not the norm. Those people have issues.

BTW- My sister is a pet nurse, and she has documents showing that PETA doesn't use painkillers on their euthanizations either... to cut costs. Any regular vet clinic would be sued for such animal abuse.

the real point argued by authors like peter singer is that, regardless of moral standards imposed by humans, every self-aware being has the same innate interest - to avoid suffering.

some could say that a quick death (by euthanasia, in this regard) is better than prolonged suffering and pain.

sure. but why would you need painkillers for injection
i don't know where i've read or heard, but injection is the most common form of putting animals down.

what euthanasia stories have you heard from peta to think they're chopping up animals or putting them in the iron maiden?

Several different guys beat sows with metal rods. One guy kicks a pig about 12 times. They take piglets and throw them at the concrete floor head first in an effort to kill them. It doesn't always work and they're just left rolling in pain. They take some piglets and neuter them and cut off their tails without any anesthetic. They spray blue paint up a pigs nose to kill it.

Then of course they tell you that if you eat ham, sausage, or bacon that you are complicit in these actions.

Some of it's in the article, but here are some key points from the video...

    - castration with no anaesthetic
    - cut off the tail with no anaesthetic
    - slamming piglets heads on the ground to kill them (worst of all, death is far from instant in many cases)
    - random gloating about how the pigs deserve to be treated that way, and how they're there for the workers to let out their frustrations
    - comments about shoving rods into pig's assholes and vaginas to punish them

    Need I say more?
