Official: blasts heard near US Embassy in Yemen

    By AHMED AL-HAJ – 1 hour ago

SAN'A, Yemen (AP) — Explosions and heavy gunfire were heard Wednesday morning near the U.S. Embassy in the Yemeni capital and police swiftly cordoned off the area, according to a government security official.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, had no more details. An embassy employee contacted by telephone inside the mission's compound in the eastern sector of San'a would only say that "there has been a security incident."

An Associated Press reporter at the scene said ambulance cars were rushing to the area and that hundreds of heavily armed security forces were deployed around the embassy. Police kept reporters well away from the immediate area of the embassy, he said.

The U.S. State Department declined comment early Wednesday.

Regional TV news networks Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya were reporting a car bomb explosion outside the embassy and an exchange of gunfire between guards and unidentified assailants. A second car carrying gunmen in police uniforms arrived at the scene soon after the car bomb exploded, they said. They immediately began firing at the embassy's guards, they said.

A fire also broke out in one of the embassy's buildings, they reported.

The reports, which could not be independently confirmed, said there were casualties but had no figures.

US embassy in Yemen hit by car bombing, rocket fire

SANAA (AFP) — The US embassy in the Yemeni capital Sanaa was hit by a car bombing and rocket fire on Wednesday sparking a series of explosions around the heavily fortified compound, witnesses said.

The car was blown up in front of the entrance to the compound and gunmen in a second vehicle then opened fire on embassy security guards with rockets as well as small arms, one witness told AFP.

The witness said there were casualties among the Yemeni police detachment posted outside the embassy but he could not specify their number or condition.

It was the second attack on the embassy this year.

That War on Terrorism is sure working well  About as good as the War on Drugs  I really hate these generic wars that you can't ever win and involve spending billions of dollars in a losing effort. Yea try and stop it, but don't give it a bull**** title.

So why speak on the condition of anonymity if you've nothing to say?

Yemen isn't the enemy. It's only an anagram for enemy.

I am going to put on my Trader Jorge hat for a minute.

[puts on hat that makes sweet_lou think like TJ]

We can all see now what is going on. The terrorists are trying to influence the election. They hope to help get republicans elected in order to continue the war on terror.

The terrorists are clearly working with John McCain.

U.S.'s Yemen Embassy Attacked by Militants; 16 Killed (Update5)

By Massoud A. Derhally and Camilla Hall

Sept. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Islamic terrorists targeted the U.S. Embassy in Yemen's capital, Sana'a, blowing up a car outside the entrance to the compound and killing 16 people in the second attack against the mission in six months.

In Washington, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters ``it is fair to say'' the assault ``bears all the hallmarks of an al-Qaeda attack.'' McCormack said he couldn't make any ``definitive judgments'' about the possible link because officials are still following up on suspicions about the perpetrators.

The death toll included six militants, four civilians and six Yemeni soldiers guarding the embassy, the state-run Saba news service said, citing the Interior Ministry. McCormack said all U.S. personnel are safe.

As to why I highlighted the TV networks in the first story... It was interested to me that they immediately knew it was an attack, while other news outlets at the time had not confirmed what was going on yet. That's all. They were probably simultaneously informed as usual.
