Anyone ever had their house totaled due to a flood? Info is a little fuzzy and I'm wondering what the requirements are. I'm in a relatively high level of the island and may not have been flooded more than a few feet. I'm guessing that with weeks of no power my house will be covered in mold if nothing else.

My biggest fear is that my insurance company/FEMA will say that I wasn't flooded enough and only pay for repairs. I want the hell out of Galveston.

I don't have any direct experience, but my ex father in-law lives on taylor lake in Seabrook and his neighbors homes always flooded and they never were torn down, just repaired...basically elminating the mold and replacing sheetrock, etc...

IMHO, unless the hose is structurally un-sound, they'll fix it...

How can you total something "special" such as real estate. The land itself will always hold value.

Thanks for the comments, guys. Even the funny ones. :)

I have no clue. I don't know how this is going to work. I'm basing a lot of this on stories I hear about people getting 'a check' and leaving other hurricane areas. Pretty flimsy, but that's kind of how everything is now.

I'm sure as hell not going to foreclose; my house is a block from UTMB and if I have to repair it and rent it, I will and I'm sure I will get renters that close, especially since everyone is homeless now. Heck, if I wanted to deal with the hassle I could probably charge more now than before.

Please, keep the info coming. And I'll certainly keep any info I find in this thread so people can look at it in the future.
