just saw a story on our local news here in adelaide australia about Ike, big 'joes crab shack' sign on the ground in front of a destroyed Keemah, interesting to note as have eaten their with Behad and Heypartner... hope the family is well Behad???
im very happy that it wasnt as bad as they said it was and we got very lucky that it took that eastern turn the last second, but they said everyone who stays in Galveston will most likely be dead. Over 25k ppl stayed and only one had died
Thanks man, I was wondering what you were thinking. WHAT SCIGUY SAYS: Jog to east was critical THE fact that Galveston Island has a future today can be attributed to a final landfall by Hurricane Ike just east of forecasters' projections. Instead of coming ashore across the island's west end or even Jamaica Beach, Ike came in directly over the east end of Galveston. This brought the storm's maximum surge to bear on Bolivar Peninsula — completely drowned for a time — and a long stretch of the upper Texas coast. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/6000307.html
what did you want them to say? you want them to tell you that the surge was going to be EXACTLY 10.2ft? i mean it's called a forecast. it seems like there's no way of satisfying some people.
We got a little taste of Ike's leftovers last night. There are trees down all over the neighborhood, I have somebody's fishing equipment under my carport, and my mailbox is missing. *EDIT* At least one person dead.
how about saving the " I told you so" attitude and be alittle more respectful to people who actually got effected by the storm. where are you? In Kansas or something? it was still a hurricane that hit the coast, no matter how you try to look at it.
Given what happened during Katrina it was probably better that the storm was overhyped. Maybe saying "certain death" was overboard but if the forecasters had said that things weren't going to be so bad and a lot of people died or were injured or even devestated to the extent we are seeing now there would be a huge outcry the other way. There's a reason why we have a hard time predicting whether its going to be sunny or raining without a major storm system bearing down on us. The weather is inherently hard to predict.
lol...what was over hyped about it? there are ****ign BOATS ON 45! my brother is planning on staying here about 4 or 5 days. they wont let anyone back for a few days. nothing overhyped about that. and saying there will be "certain death" was a pretty good assessment considering the storm surge while the storm was still 100+ miles away... i know UTMB has water on their first floor....what more do you want?
There are no pictures and no reports from West Beach yet. They are eerily absent. It's not like I'm thinking my house is still there but it would be nice to know.
There was a house on fire there as Ike was hitting. http://sonsofthebeaches.blogspot.com/2008/09/galveston-west-beach-fire-as-ike.html
Did you see Crystal Island? It is no longer an island ...it's just a series of sand bars now. Virtually 100% of Houston is without power. Drinking water systems are compromised. Galveston island is unreachable since the causeway is compromised. Gas stations are completely offline city wide. ...not sure what part of this is being overhyped.
just to add a little more: the first floor of the hospital is flooded...(news crews cant even get there to get images) business are destroyed. there are freaking boats on I-45 (ive never seen that before). the damn feeder looks like a river.
Nobody is certain, but I think around the huge buildings it isn't clear. I wouldn't take my chance right now though since the streets are still flooded unless you really need your car right now.
Seabrook finally got some stuff like Food, Water, and Ice. They have some devastated neighborhoods their too.
