Anyone still in Texas City? My ex is there, hunkering down with her kids and fam. Sounds like a BAD idea to me.
This is true. They had an oil rig experiencing 125 MPH winds 400 ft up, but only 100 MPH winds at the surface already today.
ya ive heard that....the wind speed isnt what will break the windows, it will be the flying debris, but if there is stuff at 14 stories we are in for big trouble anyways!! its smarter for me to be there because they have backup generators and water pumps and can get to ground floor very easily
Especially with kids. People with children have no business taking risks. If only adults are involved, go ahead and be as dumb as you want.
During Alicia an extreme amount of downtown windows were broken. The culprit? They used to put gravel on top of buildings back then for the roof. The gravel was swirled off of the top of all the high rise building downtown and became window bullets. None of the high rises or skyscrapers downtown have gravel as the roof anymore. Also, Hurricane Gustav ended up making landfall as a category 2 with about 105-110 MPH winds, very similar to what we will see in Houston. There are a bunch of youtube videos of Gustav out there that will give inexperienced hurricane folks an idea of the winds.
I'm getting really antsy following the Ike coverage. I wish could be down there helping y'all out. I'm already planning on doing some fundraising to deal with the aftermath and will try to come down Houston in the next few weeks to help out with cleanup.

Packing up the joint here in Beaumont. My uncle's house in Bolivar is prolly toast by now Jackson, MS, here I come
Anyone living along Galveston Bay or near the Ship Channel watch out. I just saw that the prediction for the surge is a 20 foot storm surge! On top of that about a foot of rain. I get a bad feeling many of y'all are going to be up on your roofs by tomorrow.
