Brett Faver, Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice...

You can't tell me there weren't tons of Packers, Cowboys, and 49ers jerseys with their names on them leftover after these guys were traded.

of course he's a millionaire courtesy of those big corporations that print jerseys and buy suites to see him play football.

They pay him to play football, they can't control his name. He doesn't owe people his name.

I would also like to know the NFL's grounds for listing him in the box score as C.Johnson - there is no rational connection between that and the alleged jersey contract with Reebok.

I just don't like the NFL pulling a collusive legalistic rabbit out of their hats at the last second - it's disingenuous and dumb.

And those corporations make millions off of him - and guess what, they ultimately make more when he acts like a showman than if he were a recluse.

couldn't they sell both jerseys at the same time? what if he changed his name for religious reasons; 'chad ali' or 'chad jabbar'?

So that gives those big corporations the right to tell the players what personal name to put on their jerseys?

I'd tell Reebok and NFL it's Ocho Cinco on my jersey or bust if I were Chad.

You think Reebok would be smart enough to know that allowing him to make the change would make them way more money...

I'm just curious as to their individual stories: when were they traded within the calendar of an NFL season?

those trades were done by team owners and management. Favre retired, of course they had tons of jerseys left...

we're talking about a trade or being released, not some knucklehead move by a player a week before the season started...

in the case of listed in the original article, Keith Richards changed his jersey number, but there werent alot of jerseys out there with his name on it.

Didn't Dominic Davis for the Texans change his last name?

I don't see why there is an uproar over NFL doing this. It is in the best interest of reebok to make ocho cinco wear a "johnson" jersey in the off chance that they would still be able to unload some.

Farve is a dumb example. Considering he was retired, I doubt they had planned on making 100,000 jerseys of him. Also, even when it was rumored he would be coming back, I doubt reebok went ahead and issued an order to produce more GB jerseys of him. They probably waited until it was official what team he would be on.

As far as trades and cuts, those are daily business in the NFL and Reebok has to take that risk into account when making the jerseys. However, they shouldn't have to account for some marketing stunt like this from a player.

If I were reebok, I would wait until the playoffs. If Cincy is in, then let the name change happen and start producing the jerseys as this could provide a perfect timing for a huge boost in sales. If Cincy is out, let the name change/new jerseys happen during offseason.

Of course Favre's Packers jersey will still end up being the top Green Bay jersey of all time considering he has the personal marketing/endorsement/merchandising contract waiting for him once he retires for good.

Essentially the same argument for an Emmit Smith or Jerry Rice...you'll see those in regional stores selling at a decent rate for years.

A more relevant example I would've used is Chris Chambers being traded last year.

And honestly if I were Reebok, I'd get smart and start producing Ocho Cinco jerseys only in a Bengals alternate color (or whichever jersey (home/away) doesn't sell as well).

that's fair...i'm ultimately not approaching it from the angle you're approaching it from. i'm approaching it from the, "what a dork," angle. it's a lesser known legal/commercial approach.

I agree with Mr. Ocho Cinco and SamFisher, who said that "he has an legal argument" in this thread.

Not the same. The difference here is that, LEGALLY, the guy's name wasn't really "He hate me." FAIL.

I disagree. They will sell more than five, sir.

    ;)

maybe they could just provide each Jersey with a "Ocho Cinco" cover up to put over Johnson - like he did himself last year!

What about Boldin, he's demanding a trade and if he gets it, is he suppose to eat the cost of his unsold jerseys?

I understand your point and while it is a knucklehead move, his legal name is Chad Ocho Cinco, no longer is he Chad Johnson. That would honestly be like changing your legal name and your employer won't give you a new name tag because it would cost them. You would absolutely have a legal claim.
