Memphis just traded Gasol to cut down salary, so why on earth would they want to take Randolph?

The story says that the Knicks initiated the trade "talks". I have to think it was mainly a one-sided conversation.

I could see it working. New York sends Randolph and a good chunk of his salary with him, Memphis negotiates a buyout. If they're efficient they can pay Zack and pocket the rest meanwhile getting rid of even more salary with Marko and Darko going to New York.

Everyone wins, Memphis will have an even lower payroll next summer, the Knicks will be able to make their run at Lebron, and Randolf will be free to blunder it up for another desperate team, maybe the Heat, and buffet owners in New York rejoice.

I know some of this is coming from the MCA, but an ESPN radio guy from NYC also reported it. This has to be a Knicks plant. I can't imagine Memphis going against two years worth of policy for Zach Randolph.

maybe i am unclear on salary cap rules but even if memphis negotiates a buy out, his contract still counts against the salary cap. i am relatively sure about this rule. even if the knicks pay some of the final years of the contract, i think it would still count against the salary cap. it's not easy to escape albatross contracts in the nba.

It must absolutely SUCK to be a Knicks fan. Not only do they draft guys from overseas that are longshots to be anything in this league, but they have nothing positive to look forward to for the next two years (and this going back 2+ previous years).

Counting against the cap doesn't matter to the Grizz because they ain't anywhere close to it and have no intention of getting close. I guess if the Knicks will pay a chunk of Randolph's salary, the Grizz might do this trade.

This deal makes no sense from Memphis' perspective.

A left-hand, southpaw, switch-it-up, you think he shooting right but he really shooting left......

They got a younger, youthier( ) player.

Knicks can only send $3M cash in a trade. Zach's due $48M over the next 3 years. Darko & Marco are due just slightly more than $35M over the course of their deals.

Rule of thumb is that you've got more cap flexibility with money spread across multiple players instead of consolidated into a single mega-contract. If things don't pan out it's easier to move a handful of guys making medium money than one guy on a poison pill contract.

I prefer Zach Randolph to Darko and Marko. It is trash for garbage so really no big deal. I think Zach could increase his value in Memphis.

I mean we are talking Darko and Marko.

Deal or no deal, we are last in the SW.

I disagree. It is easier to move more talented players. It is also easier to trade overpaid bigs.

sort of off topic, but doesn't Utah own NY's draft pick this year (unprotected)? I'm not sure if having Randolph on the roster helps or hurts the Kinck's, but it would suck if the Jazz ended up with a top 3 pick in next year's draft.

It's top 22 protected this year (very unlikely to happen), but it is unprotected in the 2010 draft. That will likely be a mid-lottery pick for the Jazz. Damn.

    How did they obtain that?
