The Knicks have a trade proposal on the table with the Memphis Grizzlies that would see Darko Milicic and Marko Jaric dealt to New York in exchange for Zach Randolph.

An executive with knowledge of the trade talks said Friday that Knicks president Donnie Walsh initiated the Randolph-to-Memphis talks with the Grizzlies recently and it's up to Walsh to sign off on the deal. But it appears Walsh has cooled to the idea of trading his player, the executive said.

A Knicks spokesman declined comment Friday.

Milicic is reportedly owed $14.5 million over the next two seasons, and Jaric will make $21.3 million the next three seasons. The Knicks want to trade Randoph because his contract runs through 2010-11. He will be paid nearly $48 million over those three seasons.

The move would help the Knicks with their salary cap. It has been widely perceived that their goal is get under the cap before the summer of 2010 so they can make a run at LeBron James and other high-profile free agents who will hit the market that offseason.

Andrew Marchand is the managing editor of 1050 ESPN Radio in New York.

There was a story that in the early 80s the Cavaliers drafted David Magley because owner Ted Stepien liked the fact that his name rhymed with John Bagley's.
That's the only reason I can think of for the Knicks wanting Darko and Marko.

Um, how about the fact that they would shave about ten million in salary off their 2010-11 payroll, leaving them as prime bidders in the vaunted 2010 offseason?

I suspect the interest is only on the NY end of things. So long as Memphis is up for sale, taking on salary is the LAST thing on their minds.

New owners take on the responsibility of team debt (payroll current and future), and adding a major contract like Randolph's is a big turn-off for prospective buyers.

Again, until the team is sold, spending to win is NOT going to be a Memphis priority.

I don't see anyway possible the Knicks could get rid of Randolph. Nobody is gonna take on his contract and his ability to be a cancer on and off the court.

I imagine that most of the other team owners would personally be opposed to any trade that involved the Knicks dumping salary and reducing their payroll next year.

Take whatever amount the Knick's payroll goes down by, and divide that by about 25 or so, and THAT is the amount of luxury tax revenues each owner whose team did not go over the luxury tax threshhold would be denied.

I'd bet that if the Knicks (plus maybe the Mavs) ever were able to drastically reduce their payrolls, then other teams would become more willing to go slightly over the luxury tax, since the shared luxury tax revenues they'd otherwise miss out on would then probably be coming out of a much smaller pot.

I understand the logic behind the deal but don't expect Knicks fans to like this. Aside from new coaching and leadership the Knicks have done nothing this summer besides.....

"With the 6th pick in the 2008 NBA Draft the NY Knicks select Daniellio Gabbilano.....

    BOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

....and off the top of my head, would this make four teams in six years for the ever infamous Darko?

I think that this would be a great trade for the knicks. Randolph, though very talented, proved what kind of an impact( or lack of ) he can make. If there was ever an oppurtinity for him to shine it would be on a team like the Knicks. Randolph doesn't seem to be too far from over. Much like a aging Juwan Howard, with more physicality and less dedication. The Knicks would be saving money and we all know about D'antoni ability to turn foreign lemons into lemonade. If I was Walsh, I would trust D'antoni, because there is nowhere to go but up. Maybe not

Why would Memphis even be interested? A bad character guy on a re-building team? At least those two Euros don't pick up fights with teammates. Oh well, Darko did run his mouth uncontrollably at times.

Marbury: ...you see the move Isiah pulled off? Did anybody see what Isiah pulled off for the New York Knicks? Did everybody see what he did? We got Zach Randolph, so now we got a beast to throw the ball down low to! They scared now!

Why the Grizzlies would want Z-Bo is beyond me. They better be asking for a huge chunk of change from the Knicks to take that contract. If Donnie Walsh actually had the chance to dump him on the Clippers for a 2nd round pick, he missed it. I question the sanity of any team taking Z-Bo and his contract without the Knicks paying a large portion of it.
