Uh - there's a direct quote from Rove that says something like "I don't need to win the center, I'm just going to increase my base" - that is what the 2004 God, Guns & Gays strategy was.

I'm just saying I don't think he really increased his base because had they done that, the Repubs wouldn't have lost in 2006.

The wisdom is that because he did it in 2004 is why they lost in 2006 - social conservative issues burn hot but quickly lose relevance (and actuallly divide the repubs in half, but that's another story).

I'm surprised more people didn't vote "All your base belong to us."

Rove wasn't running a campaign in 2006. He won by turning out the base - the GOP didn't do that in 2006. In 2008, the base was very unenthusiastic going into last week, but I believe they've made up quite a bit of ground since then. But the problem is that the base is fundamentally smaller now.

    3) They were effective at suppressing the vote in the Dem strongholds of critical states.

Not this time. I think independents are going to vote in very large numbers simply because of what happened in 2004. They want their votes to count this time more than ever.

By the way, if you look at that elitist Obama, his entire net worth is somewhere between 4 and 15 times the cost of the outfit Cindy McCain was wearing:
