Yes, he is a punchline, but 9/11 shouldn't be. Last night in his speech when he said something to the effect "....at the covention in Denver last week they hardly mentioned..." (don't say it, don't say it!) "9/11!"

And as I said...that's the only line I liked from him.

I agree. Really I'm suprised at how 'swiftly' a lot of democrats are ready to go this route after expressing such distain for it four years ago. Don't give up your principles in a mistaken effort to 'get rough and tumble.'

Something this brilliant and thought provoking deserves its own thread.

I think the republicans play dirty, very dirty. And you can either let them win by playing dirty election over election - or you can fight back.

I'm torn by what I am seeing, but ya know what, this is politics. And the republicans in this election are once again acting like pigs in mud and splashing dirt and poo all over the place. I'm disgusted.

I'm so disgusted that I'm considering changing from an independent to a democrat.

Are any of these people calling McCain a coward and saying he lied about his POW experience?

I think the Swift Boat thing in '04 was one of the lowest forms of political mud-smearing I have ever seen, and I think the Democrats should refrain from stooping to that level. The Republicans should be ashamed (and called out) for touting John McCain as a war hero for being a POW while trying to tear down John Kerry for being a battalion leader an saving lives during Vietnam. They both deserve respect for their service to country and leave it at that. However, in both cases, being a war hero doesn't necesssarily qualify or dis-qualify you from being president, and people should vote on who would be the best President for this country.

This is the crucial difference and why it is not like the Swift Boat disgrace. It does remind you of it.

I think it is important to get past the idea that POW status is somehow an important presidential qualification.

Nobody is holding their breath for you to praise anything military. However, having put his life on the line for the country is an indicator of his commitment to the country. Having refused early release from POW capitivity shows a commitment to his comrades-in-arms and his country. That experience is a pretty fair line to draw between himself and Obama.

Unlike Kerry there don't seem to be factual discrepancies that would lend themselves to such accusations. I say this as someone who supported Kerry over Bush. However, that this isn't as flagrant as the swiftboating of kerry does not erase the point that it has plenty of similarities.
