Not sure if this is even thread worthy, or the right place for it, but anyway.. About 9:30 this morning at the Julius Melcher post office on Timmons (Greenway area) I'm walking to my car, and I see this guy talking on his phone who looks a lot of like JVG. As he passes me and another guy, I notice the other guy is sort of doing a double take, and then I look at him and say "Is that Van Gundy", and he just sort of smiled and said, "Yeah, that's him". I had no idea that he was still here, and that he doesn't have someone go to the post office for him. I think he was driving a black Mercedes.
He's said several times that he loves Houston and the people here, and is pretty much going to make it his home for the time being (until he gets another coaching job, perhaps?).
He also said he doesn't want to uproot his family, so I venture he'll still have a home in Houston even if he gets another coaching gig.
In all honesty, he may have been. I didn't actually see him get out of a car, but when I looked around at all of the cars parked there (there's weren't very many), that's the only one that looked JVG worthy.
I've seen him twice in the last 3 months. Once having a late breakfast at Buffalo Grill and once at the Pediatric Group lobby with his daughter. Said hi each time and talked with him for a couple of minutes at Buffalo Grill. He is a very nice guy and enthusiastic to talk basketball.
haha i found this funny i mean he is JVG not Yao Ming or someone who is even more famous. I am sure that he could go to most places and not be recognized by 80% of america. but then again my parents do have someone that goes to the post office for them...unfortunately that person is me
I believe his daughter is going to school here and he planned on making Houston his home at least until she finished school
He drove one in New York until it exploded at the airport. Now he drives a Toyota SUV I believe. Yao said he missed that Avalanche or Sequoia or something.
I wish we could get JVG as an assistant coach or something. He seems happy with his ESPN gig, and he's good at it, so best wishes for him.
having JVG as assistant/defensive specialist....especially with ron ron and yao and shane...we'd hold opponents to like 75ppg.
