I'm not sure who this post is aimed at, but I went through two natural childbirths with my wife, going to all the classes, the whole nine yards, reading up on everything, going with her to the her OBGYN, and a very experienced one, and I can't see where you are coming from. In the third trimester, OBGYN's typically tell the mother -to-be not to fly. Palin flew to Texas in her 8th month. If her water broke while in Texas, any OBGYN worth their salt would have a) told her not to take the trip in the first place and b) after hearing her water broke, sure as heck would have insisted that she stay where she was for her own safety and that of the baby. If her OBGYN said it was fine for her to take a 9 hour plus flight from Texas to Alaska in that condition, all I can say is that I'm damn glad he/she had nothing to do with my wife's two pregnancies.

My wife told me that the last flight she took before her OBGYN "grounded her" was an hour flight within Texas. She was close to 7 months along and she said the airline asked her several questions before letting her on the flight, including how far along she was and whether she had permission from her doctor to continue flying. Airlines have rules governing these things, but Alaskan Air (from what I understand) is one of the few that doesn't have an official policy. One can imagine that if the Governor of Alaska said she wanted to fly with them, they wouldn't put up much of a fuss. My guess is that if it had been a major carrier, it would have been difficult for Palin to get on the plane, although her status as governor might have made a difference.

The point remains that Palin making that decision certainly falls within the realm of something that should be considered when deciding if she can exercise good judgement. In my opinion, the answer, in this case, is clearly no.

I would agree with you about the judgment call(being bad judgment). I don't think many people would even think about flying in the third tri-mester of a pregnancy. However, that was the Palin's decision and not ours. The truth is, the baby was born, seems to be healthy, and is being taken care of now. If something terrible would've happened, then that would be on the Palin's conscience not ours.

    "UNTRUE?"

The scenario? Or the story in my own life?

I do not know about Palin's case... my point, as anyone with reading comprehension should equate, is that EACH pregnancy is different. The issue here is that not every birth is the same. I was giving an example of how it could be any number of things that determine flight privileges, travel restrictions, etc. and whether or not her... HER... doctor (Palin, for those not aware of which way is up or down) thought it necessary for her to stay put in TX or fly home.

    Good grief.

One of the first things our doctor told us was that there is no such thing as a "text book" pregnancy... until you have a text book pregnancy.

In our Lamaze class for our first child, for example, there were 12 couples... they told us odds were that 1, if not 2 of our couples would end up c-section births. We thought for sure it wouldn't be us. But it was. Our second birth had to be a scheduled c-section because it was high risk... which only got to "high risk" status after four months. One of the things they checked at every other visit was the risk of a high break becoming an infection.

    Crawl back under your rock.

it's hard for me to accept that you, among the left leaning poster i consider you to be one of the more thoughtful, would stoop to dignifying this canard with a response, much less that you think it has merit. unless you are privy to every bit of her preganancy history, there is no way you are in a position to judge her actions. moreover, the baby was born healthy (i'm assuming you know downs is caused by an extra chromosone, and was apparent as far back as the 5th month).

she consulted her doctor, he said it was ok to fly, end of story. frankly, i expected better from you.

I have nine kids. One C-Section only thank God..and that was only due to a poor doctor that was more interested in making money and saving time.

You are trying to equate a possible scenario with Palin's case that clearly didn't exist. That's why I said it failed as an excuse.

If she gave birth 7 hours after getting home, she could have easily given birth on that plane..and there is NO doctor on earth that would say that was not possible. So therefore it was HORRIBLE JUDGMENT and a huge risk to get on that plane.

When I told my wife about this, she was aghast that a woman would risk her baby being born on a plane, the doctor's all told us and everyone else I know, when your water breaks, get to the hospital.

Palin made a bad call....IMHO...it does NOT bode well for future calls under pressure....IMO.

    Congrats.

For the record... I'm sure Palin knows her own body. I'm sure she had an aide or two on the flight. I'm pretty sure she could have delivered in the plane if needed, but obviously didn't feel it was that close... as again, she knew what her body was telling her.

Far be it from me to second guess a mother's intuition... especially a mother that up to that point had already birthed 4 healthy kids, and knew what she was to expect and experience.

Why this is such a "bad decision" or such "poor judgment" is completely beyond me, and to me... very self-exalting and chauvinistic to make such statements about a woman period, much more a woman that has birthed four children.

That's what I am in shock of. Some are even questioning the choice of not aborting at first notice of the possibility of Downs Syndrome.

    What next?

Duh!!! My wife was completely dumbfounded when I discussed this with her. Calling it poor judgment on Palin's part doesn't begin to describe it.

Just for the record, I never questioned that! I congratulate her for deciding to keep her baby.

Nevertheless, from an experienced lay person in delivering babies, BAD JUDGMENT for her to get on that plane still. Makes you wonder what kind of judgment she would have in the oval office. Not qualified to lead the greatest country on earth, imho.

    Define "water breaks."

Prove you read up on it. Show me proof hospitals are needed to birth a child for that matter...

Come on. Where's the hippie crowd that believes in home birth and no pain killers?

    Where are they know?

    Lost in a political buzz-jumble over a woman's clown car, that's where.

AGAIN - Each pregnancy is different... something PARAMOUNT and BASIC to the understanding of women and their personal rights.

You mean to tell me that Palin did not know what was best? She wasn't informed on her own body and her own situation? That she made an unwise decision on her own condition?

(sheltered & blinded to other possible scenarios, methinks you are)

What!!??? Someone else had a different set of events surrounding the birth of their child!!?? Oh the horror! Let's publicly vilify them.. and their doctor!!

    Amazing.

    IROC it,

I can not begin to believe you would find it acceptable if your wife was pregnant and decided to fly for 9 hours to get home.

    I mean...really?

Democrat, or repulican....it doesn't matter.....that is just plain old stupidity on her part.

by this logic, you could not fault any mother that puts their child in danger, because "they know best."

Just relax man...I suspect that by the end of this week, some hospital personel or someone will leak that the baby is really the daughters. Then your defense can really begin.
