I'm one of the what is certainly dozens of people chosen to be part of the nominating committee for the Houston Press music awards this year. I'm now accepting gifts.
What are some of the categories and what criteria does the band have to meet to be eligible? As a judge, do you have to go out and see a lot of bands, or are you a judge because you already go out and see a bunch of bands? Also, congratulations! I'm sure that it is quite an honor to be a judge. If my band qualifies, I'll send you gifts

There are tons of categories from genre to individual awards (best drummer, etc) to album of the year. I think I got to be a judge because of my studio but who the hell knows! I don't see a lot of bands but they ask that you only nominate what you know rather than everything. So, I'll go with what I know. I can always go to http://www.houstonbands.net/ and hit the links and listen to some MP3's too.
Well, assuming cover bands is a category, I would suggest a local band named Vintage. My dad is the bass player, but they do put on a pretty good show. Classic 60's, 70's and 80s rock. They have a link to their site on that HoustonBands.net website (I didn't even know that). I am posting this because I know my dad never would, but the band rocks!
Well Jeff, you can always nominate my band Secret Agent 8 for best Punk/Ska. We are one of (if not the) best ska bands in the area along with the Suspects. We play the Warped Tour every year. We made the finals of the Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands 2 (top 4 out of 5,000 bands) and were named Best Band of 1998 by the Houston Entertainment Rag. Sadly, we weren't nominated last year. The HPMA has a habit of poor nominations(i.e. - bands being nominated in the wrong category or bands being nominated that broke up two years ago.) Maybe you can help correct some of that. Check out our website. We've got all the MP3's from the old album plus a demo of a song from our upcoming album. We've got bios, reviews, and videos for you to look at. Plus, if you really want to be bought off I'm sure we can scrounge up some free CD's, T-Shirts, Stickers, etc...
